Leigh 33 Widnes 0

LEIGH had a rampant first half to thank as they secured a win that spelled relegation for their opponents Widnes.

After the admirable efforts of a group of volunteers defied the soggy conditions to get the game on, they were rewarded as two tries from Chris Boyle helped them to a crushing victory.

Jimmy Wilkinson, Ryan McKinstry and Ollie Shepherd were also on the scoresheet, with Elliot Ryan kicking four conversions to complete a successful afternoon’s work.

Boyle was clearly keen to make a mark and it was he who opened the scoring and put the writing on the wall after just ten minutes when he dotted down following a five-metre scrum.

The next score came only two minutes later when David Wood intercepted and chipped through for the fleet-footed Wilkinson to collect and score in the corner.

The floodgates were now well and truly open and Rob Drake put McKinstry through a hole to score close to the posts before Shepherd span his way over in the corner to secure a 26-0 half-time lead.

The scoring slowed after the break, with the only try coming from Boyle as he doubled his tally by scoring from the base of another scrum close to the Widnes line.

While consigning Widnes to relegation, the win should also secure Leigh’s place in North One West for next season.
