Leigh East 42 Saddleworth Rangers 12

LEIGH East welcomed Saddleworth Rangers to Ledgard Avenue in a top-of-the-table clash with both teams unbeaten in the early part of the season.

Lee Rowley got the scoring underway for the hosts on 10 minutes when he went through untouched before Pat Grainey extended East's lead on 20 minutes after some good build up play, with Adam Holland’s successful conversions opening up a 12-point lead.

Saddleworth persevered were rewarded on 34 minutes when centre Daniel Bowker scored after an East error and Ben Whitehead converted to set up a spectacular second half.

Sam Grainey opened up the scoring on 46 minutes to start off a five-try second half rout. Holland converted his third before Zac Nicholls found himself in open space after pushing through the line when Pat Grainey broke to score his first of the season, with Holland’s conversion making the score 24-6.

Back came Saddleworth though, with Bowker notching his second score and Whitehead converting to make it 24-12 going into the final quarter, but they could not stop East’s dominance.

They finished with a flourish when Andy Ball went over on 63 minutes, Holland converted before Tom Worthington scored on 68 minutes after good play down the right edge.

Holland converted again to make the score 36-12 but there was one final try in which Pat Grainey scored from 20 metres out before Holland completed his 100% kicking record to complete the scoring at 42-12.

Next week East travel to Thornhill, who are also unbeaten but only managed an 18-18 draw against Stanley at the weekend.

Hindley 12-14 Leigh East u15

EAST’S u15 side returned to action after a three-week break and edged out Hindley in a close contest played in boggy conditions.

The hosts made the brighter start but East kept solid in defence and started to play the conditions better with the forwards setting a great platform for the halves to work from.

Their good work was rewarded as Richard Farrington opening the scoring for East to lead 4-0.

However, East where penalised heavily in the next two sets which helped Hindley to score and lead 6-4 at the break.

The 2nd half saw East dominate defensively with Josh Carrick leading the way before fellow prop Jack Wild crashed over for east to lead 8-6.

East then took controll and hooker Jack Hamer topped off an outstanding performance with a try late in the 2nd half, Matty Rudd added the extras for a 14-6 lead.

A tense last 5 mins saw Hindley score to take the game to 14-12 and Hamer dubiously sin binned for an "alleged" professional foul but a resolute East held out in a fiesty last few seconds to post the win.

Leigh East u14 26-8 Westhoughton Lions

LEIGH East u14 continued their unbeaten start to the league campaign after a very convincing performance against another unbeaten side in Westhoughton.

It was East who started the better, building pressure for front rower Anthony Norcross to score the first try of the game after 7 minutes, Jack Holland converted to open up a 6-0 lead.

Westhoughton hit back just 5 minutes later when East failed to complete their sets and gave the visitors the chance to spend some time in their 20 and score their first try.

East hit back instantly, winning the ball back from the kick off and scoring through Jaeden Channell after good vision from Callum Hughes put him through a gap to score.

Ben Woods extended Easts lead to 14-4 after a brilliant solo effort which included a show and go to send the defenders the wrong way before touching down, Holland also converted to make the score 16-4 at half time.

East carried on where they left off after the break and Chad Wrigley got them going again by scoring from close range before Westhoughton grabbed their 2nd and final try of the game.

East weren't finished, however, and Callum Hughes topped off another fine game with a try to make the full time score 26-8 and carry on the unbeaten league success.

Next week East play Langworthy and they take a week off league action and turn their focus to the cup.

Newton Storm 24 - 20 Leigh East U13s

EAST were edged out in an incredibly tight games away at Newton Storm, despite running in four tries.

East started the game in high tempo, with Martin Green crossing on the right after a set play.

Keen to sustain the pressure, East worked well in defence and forced an error to regain possession, from which decisive play from the pivots created gaps and Ryan Barnes went over to score.

Newton began to try and get a foothold on the game and strong running broke the East line to bring the game to 6-8.

This put wind into the Storm sails and they ran in 2 more unanswered tries to make it 18 -8 at the break.

East were eager to get back into the game and started the second half fiercely, with strong tackling forcing an error which Allan Hartley capitalised on to score.

With the game in the balance, East made some simple errors in attack to hand momentum to Newton and they duly scored to stretch the lead.

East were now on the back foot but they worked hard to get back into the game and a great individual effort from Adam Jones saw him receive his own kick to score in the final play of the game, but it wasn’t enough to take the victory.

Wigan St Pats 30-0 Leigh East u10

EAST u10 travelled to St Pats where a tough encounter saw them beaten by the better side on the day. Despite good performances from Ryan Kelleher in the pack, Jackson Marsden at full back and Josh Hopkins in the halves, Pats ran away with the win.

Crosfields 9-4 Leigh East u9

EAST were not at their best and during a physical encounter and came off second best to a well drilled Crosfield side.

Rochdale Mayfield 2-9 Leigh East u8

EAST travelled to and came out on top against a very determined Rochdale team, with East’s greater speed, footwork and skill belying the difficult conditions. Player-of-the-match and Best Defence award winner Ewan Irwin, Fan’s Award winner Rory Dearnaley, Harvey Halliwell, Coache’s Award winner Bradley Mcdonough and Best Attack winner Zak Darbyshire all scored tries.

Halton Hornets 4-12 Leigh East u7 Bears

AN excellent team performance say the u7s Bears come out on top against Halton. Player-of-the-match Steven Charnley grabbed a hattrick, while Levi Pemberton and Dylan Wire scored two each. Ellis Anderson, Tyree Gregson, Riley Johnson, Connor Robb also scored, while Billy Williams chipped in with a brilliant full-length try. Ellis Anderson and Tyree Gregson shared the Top Tackler award with 14 tackles, with Riley Johnson just missing out with 13 but all the team got stuck in defence to share the work.

Leigh East u7 Lions 14-5 Culcheth

Leigh East u7 Lions 7-4 Burtonwood

LIONS excelled in their two games, scoring some good team tries using drills they practiced in training and some good offloads. Player-of-the-match for the Culcheth game was Callum Thomason, with Evan McVeigh picking up the Best Tackler award. Brendan Clayton was player-of-the-match in the win over Burtonwood, with the Best Tackler prize going to Alex Livesey.
