LEIGH Miners Rangers landed the pick of the 2017 Ladbroke’s Challenge Cup first round ties when the draw was made in Hull last week as they were awarded a home game against oldest rivals Wigan St Patricks to be played on 28th January (2.30pm).

It will be a dream start for new coach Jason Seddon and his team as a big crowd is anticipated for this derby match and a stern test against an always-strong St Pats team.

Since reaching the third round against Leigh Centurions a few years ago Pats have opted against entering the competition until this season but the Clarington Park club make their return with what is an eagerly-awaited match.

Miners played Pats three times in 2016, edging the series 2-1 thanks to a play-off victory at Twist Lane back in October and both clubs will be looking to get their new campaigns off to flying starts by booking a place in the second round of this illustrious competition.

With quality players such as ex-Leigh East man Brad Hargreaves, exciting young winger Afeez Oderinde and pack leaders Jamie Winstanley-Bristow and Kieran Harrison alongside captain Liam Gannon, Pats have reached the top six play-offs for the last two seasons and coach John Archer will be keen to see that trend continue, whilst Miners will want to make an early impression as new and existing players lay down a marker for their campaign under the new coaches.

The game is 2.30pm kick off on Saturday 28th January.
