LEIGH Centurions owner Derek Beaumont has bought a painting featuring one of the club's players for £5,770 to help a brain tumour charity.

The artwork depicting Leigh hooker Liam Hood and 11 other rugby league players was auctioned online to raise money for Will’s Way.

The charity was set up to help young people with brain tumours and their families after William Barker was diagnosed with the condition when he was playing for Stanningley SARLC at the age of 15 last year.

His uncle Bob Barker, an Impressionist artist, painted the Where There's A Will There's A Way painting Derek is delighted to have bought in the auction that ended at 7pm on Sunday.

It attracted 64 bids.

Derek said: "The fact that the charity is rugby-related attracted me to the piece.

"I was made up when I realised I had got it.

“I do what I can for charity so I am always trying to help.

“I really like Bob Barker as an artist and have a few of his paintings, including one that my wife had commissioned of the old Hilton Park stadium in Leigh with my son and I walking down it.

“I have to spoken Bob about the picture and he is made up I have got it."

The artwork is typical of Bob Barker’s style, with a palette of blacks, greys and browns contrasting with white light and intense colours breaking through.

Other Super League stars featured in the painting are Wigan hooker Michael McIlorum and Warrington centre Ryan Atkins.

William is also in the painting.

Bob said: “Two of my main focuses I present through my art are the themes of family and sport.

“With my nephew Will and many other young people struggling I believe they must take some relief in things that provide enjoyment.

"In Will’s case, this was rugby."
