LEIGH'S head coach Neil Jukes has urged his players to clean up their disciplinary act or face the consequences.

He will be using the extra time caused by Centurions’ early Ladbrokes Challenge Cup exit to get his message across.

A Dacia Magic Weekend date with Salford on Sunday, May 21 will mark Leigh’s return to Betfred Super League action.

They will resume at best second from bottom after last Saturday’s 40-26 home loss to Wakefield Trinity.

And they could even kick-off in last spot if Widnes upset Trinity in the opening fixture of the Newcastle game fest.

“We are not ill disciplined and some of the Championship stuff we got caught up in we have got out of,” said Jukes.

“You are always going to get five or six penalties which are 50-50’s.

“But we are giving away another four or five which are not acceptable at this club while I have been in charge. And that is the disappointing thing.

“At this level when you are not prepared to defend on the back of it, then it is hurting you.

“So, we are going to put some stuff in place after discussions with the players where it will be more than just a penalty on the field that is given.

“We will have to make sure there is some extra accountability in some of the areas where it is hurting us.

“We have got to be squeaky clean in all departments or certainly to an acceptable standard.

“Some of the standards in some games is very good but in other games it is a disgrace.”

Leigh’s 12-men conceded two crucial late tries after Danny Tickle’s sin binning against Wakefield last weekend.

And prop Jamie Acton will miss Leigh’s Magic weekend debut after being found guilty of a dangerous charge on David Fifita.

Acton, who pleaded not guilty, was also fined £300.

“It’s a good chance to get a grip of where we are,” added Jukes of the free weekend.

“I can have some good chats with individuals and collectively as group without having the focus of a game at the weekend.

“We are not taking the foot off the gas. But it has probably come at a good time for some individuals who we need to look after and keep them off their feet.

“It’s also chance to get some volume into players who haven’t played many minutes for injuries or or non selection.”

Jukes is hopeful Micky Higham, Cory Paterson and Willie Tonga could return to face Salford on Tyneside. And insists he’s in no hurry to add new players into the squad.

“What it will do is add some competition for places. That will give us a good yardstick and if they don’t perform, you don’t pick them. Ultimately everyone wants to play a game.

“That’s one way of trying to add in pressure and we haven’t been able to get out a squad in last six or seven weeks to where it was earlier in the season.”
