TEAM Leigh boxer Kyle Parr won a silver medal for England in the European Schoolboy Championships.

Parr, boxing in the 72kg category, produced four fantastic performances over 10 days in Valcea, Romania.

Unanimous points wins over Belarus champion Fedosenko Yehor and Irish number one Sean Walsh steered the 14-year-old Westleigh High School student into the semi finals.

After boxing beautifully behind his jab against Walsh, he changed his tactics with a no-nonsense display to defeat Turkish champion Alan Kudic.

He stormed straight out, throwing heavy hooks and right hands to stop his opponent in devastating fashion in the first round.

In the final the following day, Parr went toe-to-toe over three rounds with the Russian champion and favourite Islam Nikerhoev in what was judged as one of the outstanding bouts of the European Championships.

The bout was stopped twice by the referee for the doctor to check the Russian's nose, which was badly damaged in the bout.

At the end of a breathtaking final the Russian boxer was declared the winner by split decision.

The tournament caps a brilliant season for Parr, now ranked number two in Europe.

His latest success concludes a year in which he clinched his third consecutive England Boxing National Championship and ranking of number one in England as well as a gold medal at the Monkstown International Box Cup in Dublin.

He has been on the books at Leigh Boxing Club since he started at 10-years-old.

Any youngsters who would like to try to follow in Parr's footsteps are welcome along to Team Leigh Boxing sessions at either of the club's two facilities.
