It has been a year of transition at Round Ash Park for Leigh Rugby Union.

A disappointing 2016-17 campaign for the Club, led to relegation from Level 6 for the 1st XV and a severe lack of player numbers for the rest of the men’s senior teams.

2017-18 proved far more successful, with the introduction of new Head Coach Neil Greenwood, a new club captain in Ross Shepherd and a crop of talented players maturing from the junior ranks has galvanised the club.

Competition for places has been very high throughout the season, with over 40 players representing the 1st XV, on at least one occasion.

The reluctant decision to drop one senior male team has helped the player crisis, with all 3 senior men’s teams performing admirably last season.

The advent of the Lancashire Only Leagues, along with the uncertainty of the future structure, has brought about off-field challanges but the outlook is positive for the coming season.

The restructure also benefits the 2nd XV, who after finishing 3rd last season are rewarded with a trip to Keswick that will undoubtedly be a very welcome stopper.

The Tofts & 3rd XV merger has been inspired for the more social side of rugby.

Team Manager and current Club President,John Porteous, runs an open door policy for any player of any age and ability. On any given Saturday you can see 17 year olds on the same pitch as players who are 60 plus.

We must also not forget the Senior Ladies team, who go from strength to strength each year and the team’s collective efforts were rewarded with Lancashire Honours for Rhianne Boag last season.

Now we turn to the 2018-19 season, new challenges ahead for all 4 senior sides. Player numbers always remain a tough battle and the rallying cry has been firmly sounded.

Pre-Season training is already underway at the Club. It is open to all-comers, just be prepared for some hard work. Anyone interested in joining the Club and taking part in Rugby Union at a level that suits them should please contact our Director of Rugby, Karl Lawrinson on 07870 601703.
