NEW recruit Brendan Elliot is expected to help Leigh’s final push for a place in the end of season Middle 8s.

Brisbane born Elliot, 24, has joined the Betfred Championship side from Gold Coast Titans until the end of the season.

He definitely won’t arrive in time for this weekend’s re-scheduled game against Rochdale Hornets at the Crown Oil Arena.

Due to the World Cup final, the match now kicks-off on Saturday, July 14 at 5pm rather than Sunday, July 15 at 3pm.

Head coach Kieron Purtill said: “Brendan will come in and add competition to place.

“He is not just a one position man; he can play full-back, centre or wing.

“We are hoping to get Brendan over in the next couple of weeks.

“He is just awaiting visa clearance, so you are never quite sure with these things.

“Hopefully though he will get a couple of games before the Middle 8s if that’s where we end up.”

Elliot made his NRL debut for Sydney Roosters in 2014, later played for Newcastle Knights before joining up with Gold Coast this season.

He has scored 19 tries in 39 NRL appearances.

Leigh Centurions owner Derek Beaumont explained: “It is a very difficult period at the Club as it really is up in the air as to where we will finish.

“But I have to make decisions on the basis that we will make the four to put us in a good place to mount a challenge to return to Super League, if we do as it will be too late once we know our fate.

“There will also be a further announcement of another overseas player which will complete our recruitment for the season.

“I believe with everyone fit and free from suspensions, we will have the quality to be serious contenders in the Qualifiers should we make them.”

Supporters who bought tickets for Sunday game from Leigh can claim a refund by presenting their ticket before 5pm on Friday.
