LEIGH racked up a half century of points for a second successive weekend but Centurions end of season fate will go down to the wire.

Despite another big win, Kieron Purtill’s side stay marooned outside the top four, still relying on favours from teams above them to make the Middle 8’s.

Reigning Super League champions Leeds, Hull KR, Salford and Widnes plus Championship League Leaders Shield winners Toronto already occupy five of the places.

Five teams: Leigh, Toulouse, Halifax, London Broncos and Featherstone remain in contention for the other three spots.

They are separated by one point but -with the exception of Featherstone, who go to Canada on Saturday- all are favourites to win their last regular season fixture.

But London Broncos long road trip to unpredictable Barrow may offer a glimmer of hope providing Leigh don’t slip up against Sheffield Eagles at Leigh Sports Village on Sunday.

A 14th win in 16 games was never in doubt against Swinton thanks to an emphatic start after the Lions bossed the opening few minutes.

Harrison Hansen set the try scoring in motion after 11 minutes from a Ben Reynolds pass. Reynolds converted and went on to add six more goals from eight further attempts.

Swinton, with only three wins all season, quickly wilted. Winger Matty Dawson-Jones was the next to cross the try line three minutes later before Bodene Thompson and Craig Hall touched down to make it 24-0 after just 20 minutes.

Dawson-Jones finished off Leigh’s fifth try with home fans’ attentions already turning to action elsewhere in the hope of a badly needed favour.

Swinton avoided the whitewash on the half hour through Josh Barlow’s converted try but Liam Hood plunged over for Leigh’s six try of the half to make the interval score 34-6.

Swinton rallied after the break and cut their deficit with tries from Rob Fairclough and Rhodri Lloyd. Both tries were converted to leave the Lions trailing by 16.

Centre Hall took his tally to 20 Championship tries with a 52nd minute touch down before Peter Mata’utia added an eighth Leigh score 16 minutes from time.

Kyle Shelford responded with Swinton’s fourth try but Drew Hutchison rounded off the home team’s scoring.

Hall’s second try and further scores by Peter Matautia and Drew Hutchison brought up the half century for the home side.

*Leigh’s end of season awards night will take place at Leigh Sports Village on Thursday, August 23.
