A PERSONAL appearance by Atomic Kitten is the highlight of Haydock Park Racecourse's third and final music night of 2008 on Saturday.

The Liverpool girl band returned to performing together in the UK earlier this year for the first time since 2004. Their appearance at the racecourse is by arrangement with musicmedia artists.

It is Cancer Research UK music night, which has been organised by two close friends with connections to the racecourse.

Last year, Helen Ferns and Christine Blundell helped to raise £15,000 for the cancer charity from a horse racing evening.

Helen is known to jockeys especially - and visitors who may have required medical assistance - as she has been the racecourse's nurse for the last 18 years.

Christine works for North West bookmaker Betfred, the sponsor of Haydock Park's most valuable race - the £300,000 Betfred Sprint Cup which is run in September.

The two ladies, who originally hail from nearby Ashton and went to school together, have both been recovering from cancer, and have wanted to raise money for research into the disease.

Companies like Betfred and Stanleybet Sports have pledged their support by sponsoring races on the evening.

Dickon White, Haydock Park's managing director, said: "Helen and Christine made sterling efforts to raise much-needed funds for cancer research with us last year.

"Next Saturday is a high profile racing evening, especially with the personal appearance by Atomic Kitchen, and we hope they are able to raise even more money for this excellent cause."

The first race is at 6.40pm, with the last of six at 9.10pm. The musical entertainment follows the final race.

*Admission into the Newton Enclosure is £9; £17 into Tattersalls; £28 into the County Enclosure; and £43 into the Premier Enclosure. Accompanied children aged under 16 enter free.
