New boxing club opens its gym doors

A NEW amateur boxing club has opened in the area.

Astley VIP Amateur Boxing Club, with its new 3,000 sqare foot gym on Chaddock Lane, opened its doors for the first time this week.

In the short term, the aim of the club is to work with schools, youth clubs, the police and the council to identify young people who would benefit from the discipline and hard work that amateur boxing promotes.

They will be invited down to the club to take part in training sessions.

In the longer term, the club has the main objective of producing amateur boxers that can compete and be successful in national championships.

Head coach Damian Jones has relocated to Astley from his former club in Wigan.

He is supported by a team of qualified Amateur Boxing Association coaches.

In addition, a number of boxers coached by Jones at his former club have transferred to Astley so the club will be hopeful of some immediate success when it starts competing over the next few weeks.

New starters are welcome at the club, which is open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 6pm.
