Maley success for Astley and Tyldesley Runners at Smithills Serpent


ASTLEY and Tyldesley Runners’ athlete Josie Maley won the women’s event in the challenging Smithills Serpent five-mile race on Sunday.

She clocked 35mins 58secs to add to her array of podium finishes this year.

Brenda Wane picked up the over 45s award and finished as second A&T woman in 39mins 19secs, with Suzanne Gregory making up theteam which finished second overall.

Carole Baines improved on her time from last year and was well supported by Michelle Fuller and Laura Babynec.

For the men, Simon Ford revelled in the hilly terrain and came home as A@T’s first finisher in 32mins 4secs.

Second for A&T was Peter Chan in 32mins 30secs followed by Shaun Moran in 33mins 15secs, with Mark Riches running superbly well and pushing hard in 33mins 47secs.

Those four combined to finish second in the team event.

Alan Hilton got round in 35mins 8secs and showed he is on course for a good marathon time later in the year.

Terry Gardiner beat Steve Coleman by four seconds in 35mins 38secs.

Craig Bradbury also showed he is getting back to his best with a strong run of 35mins 50secs.

Derek Coop and Mark Lysycia enjoyed a friendly battle before 36mins 41secs and 37mins 8secs finishes respectively.

Ian Hamilton ran strongly in 39mins 28secs to pick up the over 55s award.
