Smith bidding for national boxing glory after Brown misses out

4:10pm Thursday 3rd June 2010

LEIGH Amateur Boxing Club's Katie Smith goes for national title glory this weekend.

She will take on Cornwall-based Leeann McDonald in Portsmouth for the ABA heavyweight crown on Sunday.

Leigh lightweight Jonny Brown missed out in his first national final at the weekend, losing on points to the very tall and talented Gage Demore of Guernsey-based Almalgamated ABC.

In front of a large crowd at the Royal Navy ABA Junior Championship Finals at Barnsley Metrodome, 17-year-old Brown could not quite close down his opponent and, despite giving everything he had, was beaten 13-7.

Brown has shown that he can comfortably compete among the top junior boxers in the country and is now placed second in the national ABA ratings.

Thirteen close bouts featured in the latest sell-out Leigh Amateur Boxing Club show at Lowton Civic Hall.

Leigh fighters faced a talented Scotland Select squad and secured an 8-5 victory.

Wins were recorded by Lewis Clark, Ben Grimshaw, Michael Connor, Adam Ridge, Tom Jones, Michael Grayson, Craig Boardman and Andy Hayes.

Fourteen-year-old Connor, of Westleigh High School, stole the show with a dominant and heavy hitting points win over Scottish national champion and Britsh Championships bronze medallist Liam Sandford, of Forgewood.
