ORGANISERS have been assured that the Leigh Sports village will become a regular venue for Championship athletics events.
Praise came from all quarters for the commitment and warm welcome provided by Leigh Harriers as they hosted a successful Northern Under 15s and Under 17s Track and Field Championships at Leigh Sports Village for the first time at the weekend.
More than 700 competitors took part, competing in more than 100 events over two days.
The cold and rain faced by the athletes on Saturday was brightened up by the performance of Leigh Harriers’ Shannon Johnson, competing in the under 17s 3,000m.
She ran a well-judged race to win her first individual Northern track medal in 10mins 25.7secs.
In doing so, she became Leigh’s first championship medal winner on the new track.
Elizabeth Lee ran 11mins 27.3secs in ninth place.
Thirteen-year-old Adam Jamson had an outstanding two days.
Competing on the first day in the under 15s 400m, Adam ran a personal best time of 56.55secs to win the bronze medal - his first ever Northern placing.
On day two he qualified for the final of the under 15s 800m final, running another personal best time of 2mins 13.87secs in the heats.
In the final Adam ran 2mins 14.55secs to finish in sixth place.
Ryan Moore gave a competitive performance in the under 17s 1,500m, qualifying for the final with 4mins 19.71secs.
He ran well in the final, finishing 10th in 4mins 23.8secs.
Liam Moore ran well in the under 17s 800m, running a personal best in the heats of 2mins 13.91secs to narrowly miss out on the final.
In the final of the women’s under 17s 1,500m, Bethany Jones was not at her best running 4mins 51.14secs for 11th place.
Georgina Leck and Lauren O’Malley both gained valuable experience of top-class athletics.
Leck completed the 800m in 2mins 41.7secs and O’Malley clocked 48.18secs in the 300m.
