A MIXED week of results will help manager Steve Pilling choose his starting line-up for Atherton Colls’ first league game of the season on Saturday.

A 4-1 win over Atherton Town in the Goldline Trophy was followed by a 5-1 home defeat to St Helens Town ahead of Saturday’s trip to Leek CSOB, kick off 3pm, and Monday’s home opener with Ashton Town, kick off 7.45pm.

The derby against Atherton Town was a lively affair overshadowed by an ankle injury to Colls midfielder Karl Atherton.

Colls led 2-0 at the interval with goals from Paul Atherton and Paul Shanley.

Atherton increased the lead shortly after the break.

Then the game was held up for 30 minutes and the injury was later diagnosed as ligament damage.

After the stoppage Town played their best football of the game and scored through a superb free kick.

Colls made the game safe late on when Paul Atherton completed his hat-trick.

Vodkat Premier Leaguers St Helens Town left Alder House with five goals but the score flattered them.

It was 3-0 through a penalty minutes after the re-start.

Lee Atherton prodded home a reply on his debut before two goals late on gave Town the nap hand.
