LEIGH Rugby Union Club’s first XV returned to form with an excellent performance at Wirral.
Facing a gale force wind, Leigh utilised a short passing game which was to prove effective in the first 20 minutes as they stormed into an 11-5 lead courtesy of two Tom Forshaw penalties and a Calvin Crompton try.
Wirral then began to dominate with the elements at their back and were to score two tries to lead 17-11 at the break.
But having the final use of the elements proved decisive.
Leigh’s big and mobile forwards established territorial supremacy.
They pounded the Wirral line before moving the ball wide for winger Adam Dyson to score in the corner. Forshaw converted from the touchline to give Leigh a lead they were not to relinquish.
Forshaw kicked a third penalty, before the pack took control.
They won a line-out 30 metres from the whitewash but were unstoppable as the point of the maul was cleverly moved to allow new front rower Steve Millard to go over. Forshaw converted.
Leigh continued to dominate and Wood and Crompton were both held up over the line before Leigh secured the bonus point with a rare pushover try.
