Burgess tastes success

LEIGH Amateur Boxing Club’s Matty Burgess secured success in the National Schools Championships on Sunday The 14-year-old light welterweight impressively outpointed the unbeaten George Reynolds, of Solihull ABC.

Conceding five pounds in weight and around six inches in height, Burgess jumped straight on Reynolds, working to body and head and constantly keeping his opponent on the back foot.

Winning every round, Burgess progressed to this weekend’s national quarter finals with a 35-27 points’ win.

Team Leigh professional Gary Davies secured a points victory at Bowlers in Manchester on Friday.

The former British bantamweight champion, now training with coach Adrian Fleming at Leigh Boxing and Fitness Gym, was having his first fight for 14 months due to a hand operation and, after numerous opponents pulling out, was matched with the tough super bantamweight Ian Bailey from London's TKO Gym.
