Ashton on Mersey 17 Tyldesley 13

TYLDESLEY Rugby Club’s first XV failed to build on the previous week’s win against Wigan when they lost out to Ashton in injury time.

The hosts started the better of the two teams but great work by winger Germain saw him pick up a loose ball just outside his own 22-metre area and race 80 metres to score by the posts, with Worsfold converting.

Ashton were using their forwards to good effect on what was a glue pot of a field, whereas Bongs looked more threatening with ball-in-hand but the levelling conditions made it difficult for Tyldesley to convert their opportunities.

The loss of forwards Weaver and Hayes to injuries within 20 minutes ultimately made Bongs’ job more difficult as they had to try to manage their one remaining replacement in the best way possible.

Ashton levelled with a short-range catch and drive before Worsfold extended Tyldesley’s lead with a second penalty just before the break.

The second period became a war of attrition with there being too many stoppages to allow the game to develop.

After trading penalties Tyldesley led 13-10 as 80 minutes were completed.

The seminal moment came when Tyldesley lost a man to the bin a minute into injury time and Ashton took full advantage of the extra man when they crashed over by the posts in the 84th minute.

Although there were still three minutes to play Tyldesley could not conjure a try and had to settle for a bonus point loss.

Tyldesley welcome New Brighton to St George’s Park on Saturday, kick off 3pm.
