Gary Megson, who was officially appointed manager of Bolton Wanderers at lunchtime, sat on the bench for the Uefa Cup clash with FC Braga.

The former Leicester City manager signed a two-and-a-half year contract at the Reebok and will take charge of team affairs from Sunday's match against Aston Villa in the Barclays Premier League.

Wanderers' chairman Phil Gartside said: "We have been able to interview a number of quality candidates and have taken into consideration all the factors which we consider applicable for the post and, after due consideration, decided to offer the post to Gary Megson.

"We feel Gary is the right man to take Bolton Wanderers forward. I have paid particular attention to his career and he has demonstrated to me that he is prepared to roll his sleeves up and has the right temperament for a battle, which this season is undoubtedly going to be.

"We have made decisive decisions over the past few weeks and this is one of them. It is not about me, Gary Megson or any other individual. It is all about Bolton Wanderers surviving in the Premier League.

"We have to be fully-focussed on the task ahead to make sure we achieve immediate success. I have spoken to the staff and the players and we are all committed to get behind Gary and turn our fortunes around."

The Manchester-born Megson will watch his new players for the first time this evening, when Wanderers take on SC Braga in the UEFA Cup at the Reebok Stadium.

Not even bothered reading this propaganda, the truth is we are a laughing stock, and today im embarrest to be a Bolton fan, looking forward to the protest tonight just to get rid of some of this anger. I have spent the last 24 hours trying to come up with someone who is currently in a job at any league club who would have been worse, cant think of one, if anybody else can let me know. We are witnessing the demise of Bolton, with the idea of selling off its assets, clearing its debts and selling it off to the biggest bidder. DISGRACE.

I hope you Gartslime fans are proud of yourselves now i have been pointing out this guy's faults and crimes for a long while on this site getting slated in the process. It's simple Megson is that happy, bemused and grateful to be in the job that he will accept whatever is to come - assett stripping in January and Summer, proceeds from sales and parachute payments to Gartside and Davies who f*ck off - thank you very much, Gartside will emigrate to oz and Eddie Davies will fly to Jersey or whichever channel island it is and hide under a mountain of cash. Wake up this is what is happening before our very eyes how can anyone defend Gartslime any further?????? Gartslimes crimes are endless but increasing in regularity and being more brutally blatant before he jumps ship.

The munich game we be our final reward for representing the growth over the last 6 seasons, thankfully we will always have that memory to keep with us when we are languishing in the lower leagues. I can accept that we are no longer going to be a top 10 team, what i cant accept is the pig-headed arrogance of one man who thinks he can see a sure thing in a person that nobody else in the football wants or can even come up with one suitable reason how or why he has ended up in this position. The last time there was such a reaction to a management decision was when Souness went to Newcastle, and we have gone one step worse.

Putting aside all the strong feelings, it is impossible to believe that this man has any qualities or the experience to warrant the manager's job. How can the Chairman believe he is the best on offer. Can he really be seen as someone who can command the respect of experienced players like Anelka or who will be able to lead the Wanderers to UEFA comps let alone Champions League. I am certain that this appointment is based on the certainty that Anelka is going in January and that relegation is inevitable. Ican't see that this will encourage him to stay or Jussi to re-sign.

Wrong manager to do so - his stats for this season alone are actually WORSE than Sammy Lee's!!!! (especially as he has come from a lower division!!!)

Munich is going to be my last game in supporting the Mighty Whites, after over 36 years. The Fat Controller in charge certainly has no respect for the fans and as such I no longer have respect in the club I grew up with.

A shocking appointment and one which I didn't believe would happen. Mind you I don't think people would have been jumping for joy if Souness had been appointed either. Sammy Lee was seen as a bit too much of a good bloke to be a decent manager and that certainly doesn't apply to Megson so who knows what will happen. He's here whether we like it or not so we have to get on with it. A straight question. Would you like Megson to keep us in the Premier League or would you prefer it if he got us relegated so he would get sacked? From what I can gather some Bolton fans would prefer the second option. Surely the time has come to get behind the players regardless as they must be as bemused as anyone else.

James, Westhoughton says...

As a more non-emotive perspective on all of this, it seems that Gartside is trying to find Allardyce II.

It is not going to happen. When SA came in, we were doing poorly in the 1st Division. He didnt have money and employed different tactics to get the most out of the players. We had few "star" players (unlike now).

Gartside seems to be stuck in an 8 year time-warp. Times move on and everyone cottoned on to Big Sam and Prozone and all that. The reputation we built for reviving careers was mainly because of (and it pains me to say this) Sam Allardyce. Look at Newcastle, he is doing what he did with Bolton there. It is pretty much working because of him. I was not a fan of Sam in the end and the football was at times terrible, but it was effective most of the time.

Now, instead of building upon what was built, and the way to do this was to invest sensible money, Gartside is not prepared to do it. I actually believe they want us to get relegated so they get the parachute money and take a punt on us doing a Watford.

The question on many people's lips, is where is the money gone? For 10 years we've been told there is no money, but surely it is somewhere. I know the 'bok cost a lot of money, but surely we must be making serious in-roads to paying it off??

Today, I worry for the future of OUR club. Megson is an unfortunate pawn now between the will and power of the fans and our egotistical maniac of a chairman.

We need an organised, constructive and peaceful protest movement put in place to out Gartside. It is safe to say, whatever he says is fictional at best.

burndenwasbetter, The Village says...
1:41pm Thu 25 Oct 07

Why was no approach made to tried and tested managers like Rioch and Todd? The club is going into decline now. Megson hasn't got a hope of achieving anything at Bolton. The club has hired a middle ranking championship manager.

Your assertion that the appointment of Megson has met with "a mixed reception" is a quaint euphemism for "total abhorrence, fury and revulsion" on the part of virtually 100% of Bolton fans (See the Bolton Evening News website, where there are over 400 messages ALL expressing their contempt for this sickening appointment.)

The appointment of Lee was a gamble that failed, but the appointment of Megson flies in the face of all reason, based on his record, and blatantly ignores the views of the lifeblood of the club, the fans.

Incomprehensible and sickeningly heartbreaking.

What is it about this record Mr Gartside that attracted you to Gary Megson as the man to take us forward!! ??

Why was this vacancy not advertised to see what quality of candidate might apply??

How many applicants have actually been interviewed??

How much "commission" has Mark Curtis raked off from all this?

Why have you wasted £300,000 compensation for a man who wasnt even under contract while at the same time you are penny pinching over giving Jaaskelainen a new contract??

Look at BSA at Newcastle now, one win and they are in the top 4. Allardyce says today that Newcastle are proceeding "ahead of schedule".

Newcastle have now recorded their best start to a Premier League season since 1996.

Martins says :

"I'm very happy and settled at Newcastle, I don't take any notice of the stories saying I'll leave," Martins said in the Daily Express.

"And if Sam Allardyce is here for five years I will be here for five years as well.

"That is how much I enjoy playing for him. I don't think I'll be going anywhere while Sam is here."

Look at Bolton in comparison, we were scaling the heights last season. Gartside you should have put your money in your pocket and kept hold of Big Sam and given him some money to spend. This is ALL YOUR FAULT.

Words from Gartside like we need someone ready for "a battle" and its all about "surviving" take us back to the bad old days. We are in this mess due to Gartsides poor running of this great club.
We should be aiming for Europe again not fighting relegation. Why was all money earned over past few years not reinvested in taking club forward. Megson is another clear indication that the people running this club have no skill or ambition.
Gartside listen to the fans, leave now and take your friends with you. Its just not right that you can ruin this club and make it a laughing stock.

Megson knew this day was coming, he must have had contact with BWFC weeks a go. That's why he never signed a deal at Leicester. The end of Bolton Wanderers has finally arrived. This is the biggest mistake that Gartside has ever made. I hope that he is presented to the fans on the pitch at tonight's game so we can all make our voices heard and display our utter disgust at this pathetic appointment. There were some people who says Mandaric had lost it. I think he's a genius! £300k for a 6 week investment. He must be laughing so much at Phil Gartside's stupidity. The comments from Leicester fans say it all. They're glad to get rid of him and the club has made money in the process. Foolish Bolton Board. "Sack the board, sack the board, sack the board"

please take all our thanks for what you have done for the club but if you are unable to put money in then please sell up and take gartside with you. i wont slag megson as he is unproven with our beloved club but if we do go down this year i fear for the future. mr gartside please dont underestimate the depth of hatred of the bolton public towards you for the disgraceful way you have allowed the club to be run in the last few months , allowing sam to go without getting compensation then paying it for someone who was out of work for 18 months is a remarkable act of idiocy for an alleged "businessman" . if he was that good why didnt you bring him in in the summer for FREE !! as the red indian saying goes WHITE MAN SPEAK WITH FORKED TONGUE .

I agree but the Bolton News have never been over critical although having said that i have detected a slight change in Sharrock's reporting over last couple of months whereby he has been a touch critical. Bolton News join the revloution - report on the fans' feelings, don't pull the one positive comment to the appointment out of the 200 negative ones. Tell it like it is - we are not happy the Bolton News should not be happy if the people are not happy forget losing your rights to interview Gartside or the players just tell it like it is and don't worry about the consequences - deal with the truth.

What is Gartside's educational background? Is he simple or bright? If he is bright, then his cunning certainly confounds me; as far as I can see, he's just condemned himself to an inevitable resignation in the near-future. History shows that you cannot treat the masses with contempt; they will rise up and oust despots. We must do all we can to ensure that this happens, but first we must scare off Megson...starting tonight. The future of the club has to be in our hands now; we must take positive action so turn your despair to vengeance and voice your feelings loudly and persistently.......o
r perhaps PG is, after all, just a simple, incapable, naive, ignorant, deluded imbecile who is now choosing managers in his own image!

I have a 10 day old son whom i was supposed to be taking to the Reebok today to sign him up for the junior whites and buy him a BWFC kit. My Grandad took my dad to the matches from an early age and my father introduced me in 1986/7 season and i have been an avid fan ever since being a season ticket holder for the majority of seasons. Therefore i would like to carry on the tradition and although a little young yet buying him a kit and signing him up to the junior whites is i felt the right thing to do. However i cannot do it today in fact i am so unhappy and upset with the present situation at BWFC and the regime in charge that i am thinking of having a break from watching football altogether. I am sick of being used and abused by the club and no it isn't part and parcel of supporting BWFC, we have had a rough ride over the years and the directors have persistently abused our loyalty. email sent to sky so that they can ask questions

Over 90% of Bolton fans on various forums and in Bolton News object to the appointment of Gary Megson as BWFC Manager. Nothing against him personally but his CV just doesn't stack up for a proven Premier League manager's job. He will have the fan's full support as he's here now here but it is obvious he is not up to the job.

I would like Mr Gartside to answer the questions that every fan wants to know the answers to, perhaps Sky's reporter at the press conference could ask these :-

Why does he think he is the best candidate for the job against some of the other names mentioned ?

Why was Mark Curtis involved in the process as it appears that he would always favour Megson ?

What was the rush as we had a competent person in Archie Knox looking after the team, surely the job should have been properly advertised to see who was REALLY interested and a decision made based on this ?

There will be protests made against Gartside I have no doubt. I do not blame Megson for wanting to better himself but it appears loyalty is not in his vocabulary !!

The best option he promises is to save the club from relegation (but don't bank on it) in the final game of the season, and to cause sufficient unrest in the boardroom that Gartside resigns. He's not one for staying anywhere long and what do you make of a man that agrees terms at Leicester in September and jumps ship in October.

I will support the players for 90 minutes but I will be letting Gartside know my feelings on his ridiculous last 2 managerial appointments. If we had the chairman and the manager in place we'd be fine, but with Gartside and Megson we sure as hell don't.
Yes, and that's why Diouf, Anelka and Jaaskelainen will be out of the door in January. Why would any player want to play for a club with fans as fickle as ours?

Goal.com

Gartside made a glaring error of judgement in appointing the hapless Lee to take over from Allardyce, and then compounded the mistake by burdening inexperienced Lee with the tag that he would be better than Allardyce in the role.

Now he looks like antagonising fans further by appointing Megson, whose managerial credentials are hardly earth-shattering and whose loyalty to previous employers has been questioned more than once.

Square Football

It’s also difficult to believe that such an appointment would do much to persuade the likes of Jussi Jaaskelainen, El-Hadji Diouf and, particularly, Nicolas Anelka that their futures lie with the Trotters.

Having punched well above their weight in recent years, Bolton is now reeling on the Premiership ropes. These are tough times at the Reebok Stadium and with Gartside’s ability to spot a decent manager looking increasingly open to doubt, many will regard the appointment of Megson as being tantamount to throwing in the towel.

BWFC not just the laughing stock of the premier league, but the laughing stock of football. And it's all down to Gartside not putting his hand in his pocket for Big Sam, a phenomenon who should have been chained to his desk, instead of all that claptrap about Little Sammy playing "proper" football. What an ABSOLUTE JOKE the club has become.

It's a brave man who'll go against the views of over 90% of the support base of the club...or a complete and utter idiot!

The only way I can rationalise this is to try and get into Gartside's psyche. Why would he want to employ a manager whom, by his own admission, is an "abrasive" character? It can only be because Gartside believes the players are a complete bunch of overpaid prima donnas that need to be taught a lesson. He's not realising that using fear to motivate just will not work on the majority of our players. I can't think of any of our players who needs any grief from a new Manager. They're not stupid and will simply jump ship to another club when Megson start to crack the whip. Players these days don't take kindly to bullies..they don't need to take that kind of stuff anymore. That's not to say they're all lazy gits - far from it actually, they just respect guys with more insight/intelligence
/all round leadership qualities than bullies. This appointment says more about Gartside's contempt for Players and Fans than for his desire to move the club forward.

This appointment may - or may not - be the worst thing that ever happened at BWFC. We won't know for a few games so I suggest we all stop bleating about it. It's happened; but whilst it's happened let's give the chap a break and put the full force of our collective support behind both him and the team.
I personally don't give a **** about Gartside and his happy mob known as the board. In thirty-odd years of supporting BWFC I don't think I could recall the names of too many board members. I can, however, recall the names of all the managers starting when I started watching. My first was Jimmy Armfield. Some managers were memorable because they were good. Others were memorable because they were crap. The thing with every single one of them was that we, the fans, didn't have crystal balls and thus didn't know which would end up good and which bad. Let's give Megson at least a few games to turn things around. He at least deserves that doesn't he?

Lets forget all this negative commentary. The facts are we are in Europe tonight in a league we can easily escape from. We are in the quarter finals of the cup next week and we are bottom of the league. We need to pull together. The last thing we need is protests and negativity towards a manager that hasn't taken charge of a game. Protests spell the end not the appointment of a manager. Whether the protests are aimed at the Chairman, the club or the team - they are NOT helpful. Lets not forget I dont remember anyone being positive about Gartsides appointment of Big Sam - he was scratching around with Blackpool, Limerick and Notts County before he did his magic at Bolton. The point you've missed is that we were not a Premier League team when SA took over. We've built ourselves in to a top 10 team, with 2 UEFA cup qualifications in the last 4 seasons.

We needed someone to push us to the next level - however without the board - GARTSIDE - prepared to spend sensible money, we've ended up with Megson. If he is around by Easter, I'll be v. surprised.

Megson is not wanted, Gartside is responsible, so people are going to protest. I am. For god's sake - stand up and be counted.

RD. I think you mistake genuine anger and concern with fickleness and I think your aspiration for our club is depressingly pessimistic. BSA had big ideas..and in large part turned them into a reality...he didn't do that thinking that he couldn't possibly achieve greatness with the odds so clearly stacked against him..he went out, set his sights high and through meticulous planning and passion achieved great things. If we follow your logic we would set our sights low and live a life without hope of aspiration. The hostility you're receiving on this list is reflective of the fact that the majority of fans want to continue to "live the dream"...and what the hell's wrong with that? Quite rightly they're telling you to shut up because no-one likes a pessimist. Every football fan believes his or her team has the potential to achieve greatness..that's the essence of being a fan. And rightly we don't like it when the leaders cynically exploit the loyalty of fans for their own ends. Which is exactly what Gartside has done with this appointment. Megson is wrong for this club. It's a depressingly negative appointment that's doomed to failure. Every fan has the right to voice their objection and should do so...because we are the true custodians of our club's future....not the elitist self interested cynical likes of Gartisde et al.

There is a clear conflict of interests with an agent representing both his client and his client's potential employers; it would not happen in any reputable profession, but then again this is football.
On the positive side, someone has posted that Megson is not a stayer. Fan pressure particulalrly at games is very likely to move him on and if he goes then it would be impossible for the Chairman to remain. Their futures are closely linked now; move one and get rid of both. So will the last two fans make a noise at every game.

Raoul Duke, why so down on your fellow fans? I know it's annoying when people start not going to games but do we really think we deserve Megson?? Just for the record I'd of been happy with Dowie, Jewell or Coleman.

**** OFF IF YOU DONT LIKE IT
Maybe you should take some of your own advice? Anyone who thinks we 'deserve' to be in the Premiership is a deluded moron. The sad truth is, Sam Allardyce was the magic ingredient that kept us flying high for the last few years. It's about time a lot more people realise that.
You talk some s**t. You don't think that players such as Anelka, Diouf, Nolan, Jaaskeleinen are premiership players? This is a premier league club, one that should be pushing for Europe. If we had the chairman and the manager in place we'd be fine, but with Gartside and Megson we sure as hell don't.
Yes, and that's why Diouf, Anelka and Jaaskelainen will be out of the door in January. Why would any player want to play for a club with fans as fickle as ours? Protesting against a new manager before he's even had a single game in charge???? Pathetic.
If we'd consistently seen sold-out crowds at the Reebok, you might have a point. As it is, our attendances show we've got a mediocre fanbase who deserve a mediocre manager. So-called "fans" were happy enough to walk away because of the 'ugly' football under Allardyce, in spite of the success it brought. This is what they deserve.

Raoul Duke - only 3 years ago we were selling the reebok out on a regular basis. The fan base is there but whilst we have monkeys in charge those attendances will drop and will continue to drop if things do not improve.People are not stupid and are definately not willing to part with hard earned cash if we are not seeing something in return.Unfortunately our board fail to recognise this!!

SUPERWHITE ARMY

delboy has got it right in terms of the consequences of this decision for Gartside.

When Megson goes and he will undoubtedly be gone lets hope sooner rather than later Gartside will have a lot of egg on his face if the appointment hasn't worked out. Personally think he's running out of slack when it comes to making bad decisions and he is going to be under a lot of pressure if Megson fails with the same nose dive that Sammy had.

The last thing Gartside need is restless natives calling for his head ever week.

Know your power as fans and keep up the pressure and we will get what we want.

raoul you are entitled to your oppinion just as much as i or anyone else is but goin on about so called true fans who were there in the old third division is a bit much, the club has moved on since then and some supporters dont remember those days and only know of the recent times, the club and its supporters deserve better and if you dont think thats the case well so be it ,but i for one want the best for my club and that certainly isnt gary megson, i am getting too long in the tooth to change my alleigance but my son who is also a season ticket holder knows only of the recent good times and its these fans i feel sorry for,as a fan and season ticket holder for many years all i can see is adownward spiral and it does not matter a toss if theres only one fan at the club they still deserve better so going on about stayaways isnt helpful to your arguement

Brak wrote: I'm afraid Raoul Duke I do remember Allardyce being appointed and I was actually quite happy about it. The fans are protesting because it wasn't the direction we thought Gartside would take us in so it's a big shock and a major disappointment as we had bigged are club up to deserve a proven top flight manager. Is this wrong to have such ambition? I think it will boil down to us having to give Megson a chance but it still doesn’t make the future any easier seeing how Gartside has operated in this, and other situations. We feel hurt but it’s not just a minority opinion. Megson’s stats speak for themselves.
Please, tell me what the fans have done that means we deserve a top quality manager? Attendances have hardly been consistent and inspiring even at the height of our success! Why would Gartside splash out on a big-name, proven manager when the fans don't even seem interested? No. In Megson, we really are getting what we deserve thanks to the fickle stay-aways.
Raoul Duke. Your contempt for the fans says more about you than the fans to be honest. Many teams have seen a decline in attendances which is due to a number of factors (rise of commercialism in the game, ticket prices, moving stadia to out of town sites, extent of live games on SKY, changes to schedules to accommodate TV audiences, centralisation of resources/wealth into the hands of a few top clubs, growth of external ownership etc etc)To put it down to "fickle fans" says you're either too thick to understand the complexity of the issue or too stubborn to care. Let the fans speak as they're the only ones that truly care about the club and have the clubs best interests at heart. And it's clear that the majority view is that Megson's appointment is bad for our club. Anyone who cares about the Club's future should rightly protest at that.

mr.gartside has, over the years, shown just how blinkered the bolton board can be. they did the same with big sam,how he lasted so long i will never know. consistantly giving him a miniscule transfer fund, he did have the talent to pull some nice little tricks.maybe it is myself who lacks faith, but i fail to see how mr megson will keep bolton out of trouble.maybe he is in the wrong game. he may be more suited to politics or a top flight executive where failure holds great rewards
