Gary Megson, who was officially appointed manager of Bolton Wanderers at lunchtime, sat on the bench for the Uefa Cup clash with FC Braga.
The former Leicester City manager signed a two-and-a-half year contract at the Reebok and will take charge of team affairs from Sunday's match against Aston Villa in the Barclays Premier League.
Wanderers' chairman Phil Gartside said: "We have been able to interview a number of quality candidates and have taken into consideration all the factors which we consider applicable for the post and, after due consideration, decided to offer the post to Gary Megson.
"We feel Gary is the right man to take Bolton Wanderers forward. I have paid particular attention to his career and he has demonstrated to me that he is prepared to roll his sleeves up and has the right temperament for a battle, which this season is undoubtedly going to be.
"We have made decisive decisions over the past few weeks and this is one of them. It is not about me, Gary Megson or any other individual. It is all about Bolton Wanderers surviving in the Premier League.
"We have to be fully-focussed on the task ahead to make sure we achieve immediate success. I have spoken to the staff and the players and we are all committed to get behind Gary and turn our fortunes around."
The Manchester-born Megson will watch his new players for the first time this evening, when Wanderers take on SC Braga in the UEFA Cup at the Reebok Stadium.

Premier league record as manager Played 48 Won 7 Drawn 13 Lost 28 What is it about this record Mr Gartside that attracted you to Gary Megson as the man to take us forward!! ?? Why was this vacancy not advertised to see what quality of candidate might apply?? How many applicants have actually been interviewed?? How much "commission" has Mark Curtis raked off from all this? Why have you wasted £300,000 compensation for a man who wasnt even under contract while at the same time you are penny pinching over giving Jaaskelainen a new contract?? I have just emailed the following to sky sports. Your assertion that the appointment of Megson has met with "a mixed reception" is a quaint euphemism for "total abhorrence, fury and revulsion" on the part of virtually 100% of Bolton fans (See the Bolton Evening News website, where there are over 400 messages ALL expressing their contempt for this sickening appointment.) The appointment of Lee was a gamble that failed, but the appointment of Megson flies in the face of all reason, based on his record, and blatantly ignores the views of the lifeblood of the club, the fans. Incomprehensible and sickeningly heartbreaking.

Bolton News join the revloution - report on the fans' feelings, don't pull the one positive comment to the appointment out of the 200 negative ones. Tell it like it is - we are not happy the Bolton News should not be happy if the people are not happy forget losing your rights to interview Gartside or the players just tell it like it is and don't worry about the consequences - deal with the truth.
Is the Bolton Evening news going to print how the fans feel. This should be the big story NOT Garry Megson's appointment. If the Bolton news speaks up for the town then something should be printed on behalf of the fans. After all we are the ones who keep your company going.

Lets forget all this negative commentary. The facts are we are in Europe tonight in a league we can easily escape from. We are in the quarter finals of the cup next week and we are bottom of the league. We need to pull together. The last thing we need is protests and negativity towards a manager that hasn't taken charge of a game. Protests spell the end not the appointment of a manager. Whether the protests are aimed at the Chairman, the club or the team - they are NOT helpful. Lets not forget I dont remember anyone being positive about Gartsides appointment of Big Sam - he was scratching around with Blackpool, Limerick and Notts County before he did his magic at Bolton. I have spoken to a West Brom and a Stockport fan today and they say there best times were under Megson. Give the Guy a chance first though.

I'm afraid Raoul Duke I do remember Allardyce being appointed and I was actually quite happy about it. The fans are protesting because it wasn't the direction we thought Gartside would take us in so it's a big shock and a major disappointment as we had bigged are club up to deserve a proven top flight manager. Is this wrong to have such ambition? I think it will boil down to us having to give Megson a chance but it still doesnt make the future any easier seeing how Gartside has operated in this, and other situations. We feel hurt but its not just a minority opinion. Megsons stats speak for themselves.

Raoul Duke, why so down on your fellow fans? I know it's annoying when people start not going to games but do we really think we deserve Megson?? Just for the record I'd of been happy with Dowie, Jewell or Coleman.

What I'm saying is, protesting outside the ground is completely childish at this early stage. If he wins a few games, all these petty hypocrites will disappear without trace again.

Raoul Duke wrote:Raoul Duke. Your contempt for the fans says more about you than the fans to be honest. Many teams have seen a decline in attendances which is due to a number of factors (rise of commercialism in the game, ticket prices, moving stadia to out of town sites, extent of live games on SKY, changes to schedules to accommodate TV audiences, centralisation of resources/wealth into the hands of a few top clubs, growth of external ownership etc etc)To put it down to "fickle fans" says you're either too thick to understand the complexity of the issue or too stubborn to care. Let the fans speak as they're the only ones that truly care about the club and have the clubs best interests at heart. And it's clear that the majority view is that Megson's appointment is bad for our club. Anyone who cares about the Club's future should rightly protest at that.

Attendances have hardly been consistent and inspiring even at the height of our success! Why would Gartside splash out on a big-name, proven manager when the fans don't even seem interested? No. In Megson, we really are getting what we deserve thanks to the fickle stay-aways.
