ANELKA UPDATE: Why we sold him - Gartside

Wanderers chairman Phil Gartside has revealed more details about Nicola Anelka's £15m move to Chelsea.

He said: "It became obvious that Anelka wanted to leave and sign for Chelsea, so we had to act in the best interests of Bolton Wanderers Football Club and that is what we have done.

"The improved offer met our valuation of the player and we have decided to accept it.

"The club had made it clear that we wanted to keep him, nobody at Bolton Wanderers wanted Nicolas Anelka to go anywhere, and I mean nobody, but when a player wants to leave that is it, they no longer have the best interest of the club at heart and we had to recognise that and act accordingly.

"The deal represents an excellent deal in both football and business terms.

"We will continue with our on-going transfer strategy and we will be working hard to bring our targets into the club and further strengthen the squad.

"It has been a pleasure to have Nicolas Anelka playing for Bolton Wanderers. He is a very special player and I wish him well for the rest of his career."

Gartside of course, will try very hard not to spend a single penny of the money received for Anelka.

This man is quite clearly deluded and disturbingly slimy I have to say. The subtext of his statement is:" Its all his fault, yes Anelka! It was him, he wanted to leave! He was being selfish! Its not my fault at all, honest!". He is totally incapable of taking responsibility for sanctioning the sale. As for the 'on-going strategy' can anyone enlighten me about what it is? Has he told anyone what his strategy is - he's scarcely made a statement since the Allardyce spat with no statements to steady the ship or keep the fans informed.

We HAVE to spend ALL that Anelka money, plus whatever was on the table anyway (£5-£6 million??) on rebuilding.

So thats about £20 million then!!!

Even signing the Swedish striker (name esccapes me) from Toulouse for £9 million still leaves £11 million to strengthen that defence and midfield..........ho
wever........

So, knowing that the Anelka deal was inevitable and just a battle of brinkmanship, whats the plan we must surely have in place, who can we now sign in time for our game on saturday, Chelsea have made sure that Anelka plays on saturday.
We dont have time to sit and watch the money on deposit we need players now, not questionable defenders who wont come until after the African nations cup, nor do we need any more midfielders. We need a quality striker and quick

Good business sense????? Shouldn't we have brought someone in first???? No what will happen now is that all clubs know we have 15 mill to spend so they will jack their prices up!!!! or hold out for more seeing that now we are without a top striker (no offense to other team players) Skysports have classed this weekend's game as "Rover & out" no striker no contest!!! Please tell me why we haven't signed anyone yet as Taylor isn't available until a replacement found (good business sense) Balde is off to the African's cup regardless of us signing him, Ghaly the same???? were is our next signing?????? Correct, no chance of us spending £15m + the £5m he has already stated we had to spend regardless of selling any player, that comes to £20m - I will eat my hat if that happens.

15 million, or 7 million profit is peanuts really when you look at the going rate for the leagues top 2-3 strikers and who was buying from us. I can only assume that there was some clause in his contract, rather than Gartside wetting himself over a few million profit as we are lead to believe. They were starting to panic about their lack of strikers, and with hopes of the title slipping they'd have easily paid 20 +.

"Good business in football terms" - ? We've sold our goal scoring machine with nothing even close to a deal regarding a suitable replacement. It'll take 2-3 BIG signings just to hold our current position, which will probably cost more than 15 million in total, and 4-5 signings to progress back towards the top half.

Let's pick up as a minimum shopping: Defoe, another proven striker and get 2 new, solid central defenders.. Plus Baldy as cover if you like.

Do people think he can just go the bank and draw it out. If he took any money from the club he would be sent to jail as it is against the law. All the money that comes into the club, every red cent, is published on the clubs accounts.

Phil,
Personally, I find little to criticise in your public statement. An asset which doubles its value in less than two years is good business. In addition you have had an effective financial management and acquisitions strategy for close on a decade and I have praised it on here regularly, today even in another thread.

I'm prepared to take it on trust that if an assessment were undertaken BWFC might qualify for a business excellence award and various other validations of business enterprise and initiative.

The problem is, Phil, that I'm all tribal about this and all reason and commonsense deserts me and always has when it comes to BWFC.

I just want to see BWFC players, representing my home town, a) kick a little round object into 'their' net and b)stop said object being kicked into our net. And I prefer the incidence of a) to be greater than b)!

Ever so occasionally I kid myself that I belong to the ' It's how we play' rather than 'it's how many we score and whether we win' body of opinion, but it's not true, alas.

I'm looking to you and your team to deliver returns to your shareholders and stakeholders and that's us, Phil, whether we have a financial interest in BWFC or not.

I'll reserve judgment and will assess your ' business excellence' next February. You may fail- it's rough out there- but if you do, then be off with you to the wilderness with Big Sam. That's a business strategy!I wish you luck and a Happy New Year

If Gartside is partial to a wad of dosh, does it not make sense that he would rather keep us in the Prem? That's worth way more than Nic's fee.

After all, who authorized buying Anelka in the first place? Hardly a skinflint tactic on his part. The best bit of business that BWFC ever did was buying Nic, and then signing him to a long term deal; virtually assuring us of the fat wad of cash from Darn Sarf shortly thereafter.

Look at all the other great players we've had that ended up leaving at bargain prices. We all said "what are we going to do with the money" then too.

How many great players have we had since Eidur was sold to Chealsea for a pitance, just prior to nose diving back into the first division.

If we've done nothing to balance this move by the end of the month (some three weeks away), then I would be very upset. But I bet things won't be anywhere near as bad as predicted above.

Eidur never played for us in the Premiership
How many great players have we had since Eidur was sold to Chealsea for a pitance, just prior to nose diving back into the first division.
Did you even try and sing the song before you wrote that?

My team of fact checkers must have missed that point, and I appologize. However, let's not throw the bay out with the bath water. The point remains.

Interesting posts about Gartside and all the cash. If anyone bothered looking at our acocunts last year it was our Chief Exec who robbed the club blind, a whopping £400k salary for no improvement in the financial performace at all. And yes Gartside does only get paid a moderate salary, but his own company also received over £200k in management fees. Add into this the dividend that they paid out on their own shares and you do have a board who is lining it's pockets through the financial performance of OUR club.

If those involved in Bolton Wanderers football club could concentrate on the important element of football instead of diversifying their business operations, we might see an improvement within our club. Otherwise we can say hello to the Championship and administration.

Seems to be fashionable these days...

Well said about the business however, business profit does not put goals in the back of opponents nets unless you replace the asset you have lost with another asset. In the transfer window we have not only gained 15M from the sale of Anelka we have gained in wages of Anelka and Garry Speed which is well in excess of £ 130K per week therefore, if we make our signings as close to the last minute as possible we will have saved 500K so that takes into account Cohen. The next players they will want off the books will be Stelios, Campo, Jussi & Diouf then we will be saving that is the ethics of our board. They will beg steel and borrow and go in for a lot of players who would not come to Bolton just to show that an effort is being made to replace Anelka. At the end it will be only to appease the ardent of defenders of the board so they can say look at the attempts and endeavours of our leaders. Do not wish to be gloom and doom its just we are 2 weeks in the transfer window out of the FA cup no players signed and we are looking at a hard winter in which our manager has stated that we have a points total to achieve with a half witted tactician setting the total. Still will be there on Sunday trying to get some positives out of negatives and hoping that we can beat Blackburn.

I'm gutted about Anelka leaving. It would seem that in the media's eyes that unless your a top four club you can't keep your quality players.
However its a good deal on two counts. The guy wanted to go, if we'd kept him do you think he'd give his all in the next 17 games? He'd have sulked, his value would have gone down and we'd have got far less for him in the summer. This birch is hardly the board's fault is it? Also a £7 million profit over 18 months is good business. I seem to remember Bolton finishing in a european place without him in the team as well. As long as the bulk of the money is reinvested in strengthening the team in the right areas then things might be ok. If Megson is given't the money or wastes it then calling for the board to be sacked would be justified.

Can a woman join in lads- without all that nonesense about potency and size of assets!
Nik always said he wanted to play for a champions league club. It's fairly certain his contract had a clause saying he could go if a certain price was met by said clubs; that's why he was re-contracted so the get out money could be raised. In that case it was not a case of if but when he left and given the time left to pick replacements and get them, the earlier the better in January.
I'm no Garside lover but in this case I find it difficult to blame either the Board or the player, and I wish him well in the future.
I do however agree that the money must be used to strengthen the team not the Board's bank balances.
As always- and for the last 30 odd years of roller coaster rides, I live in hope.

Notlob: I know most fans on this forum hate Gartside and I'm not going to be putting him in for "Man of the Year" awards either but there is a huge amount of expenditure at a club like Bolton. It's not as simple as this much in for a player so therefore that much out for a new one. Get a grip lad! This deal has been for the most part a good one for us. We pay 8 mil for a lad who's served us well in his brief time here. We sell for 15 mil because the board held out and didn't buckle at the first offer thrown.

Let's wait and see who we get in his place and where we end up at the conclusion of the year before we bring down the axe.

Personally think we might struggle to spend the money wisely right now. Not in the same position as we would have been pre LSL farce. Who's going to come to a bottom end club in threat of relegation? Nobody you could justify spending big money on.

Best bet for me would be to start from square 1 and try to entice a couple of inspirational Youri type figures down for a career last hurrah and then spend some money refitting the squad in mundane but necessary positions where we have lost or soon will lose players.

Best we can hope for is that next season is less disasterous and we have opportunity to regroup and rebuild so we might get an Anelka coming back a couple of seasons from now.

James, Westhoughton says...

I think maybe the club made one big mistake and that was not saying on Dec 31st that Anelka was not for sale at any price (and i mean any price!). Once it was known he had his price we were in trouble as bids were always likely. I thought he would prefer to sdtay with us as he gets first team football every week and that's what he needs to stay in Les Bleus for Euro 08. Who could have predicted Chelsea being effectively without a striker (OK Drogba , yes ant the ANC) but the rest? That's why we lost him.. he knows he has that first team shirt at Chelsea at least until late Feb in order to establish himself... simply too good a chance to let go... and a shed load more money too no doubt. I completely disagree with Gartside, this deal is not "excellent" in any way, shape or form.

Think about it...how many players of Anelka's quality would be willing to join us where we are at the moment? Anelka said himself he would be happy to stay at Bolton, surely it makes sense to see if he can get us out of relegation and then re-organise in the summer.

Gartside's sold us out yet again, just wait and see the attendances fall below 15,000.

If a player does not put the effort in then the price on his head falls.

It would have been in his own interest to player the best he has been doing up until summer where he would more than likely commanded the same price as now or even more!!!

1) refusing to give any money to Big Sam in the early season's.
2) after Big Sam left, Gartslime slagged off Big Sam saying we had a better manager in Sammy Lee, not only being proved wrong but embarassing himself and the club
3) bringing in a manager to replace Sammy Lee that has struggled with clubs in the lower divisons and refusing to listen to the fans opinions and instead calling them fickle
4) selling our top striker 2 days before a big game with no one else to replace him!!

Anelka too good for Bolton.

Premiership too good for Bolton

It,s good for me as I would be able to afford a ticket to see Bolton play Southport.

News flash!!!

Phil gartsie reporting from his 14.9 million luxuary yacht in light of one of the erlier comments and due to fan and manager pressure I have decided to slightly cut back on my cigar habit and relese another 50 quid to the transfer kitty. I know the offer seems to good to be true. Hey you know we are all making sacrifices especialy with the high ticket prices its the least I can do.When I lookaround and see all the other chairmen sailing there 30 million pound yachts I am wondering if Selling Jussie nolan and diouf will cover the cost of upgrading Thanks all you loyal Bolton fans he he he he he he he killing my self laughing

Not too confident that Gartside will re-invest the money from Anelka. Whilst its good business (return on original investment) it does kinda underline the chairmans lack of ambition?? Whilst i do think (in this day and age) there isnt much any club can do when a player wants out......Whos to say the next crop of inbound players wont want out after a year of a 3/4 year deal??

its very dissapointing to lose Anelka, but we are not the only club to be subjected to his 5 minute length of service, he hs earned more money from transfers than any other player in the premiership. He is a football mercenary.
He wanted to go, we couldnt keep him, £90/000 per week and a move to Chelsea its a tough one isnt it.
I personally hope we can at least re cycle 10 million on a couple of up and coming players who want to wear the shirt and get on with saving our premiership status, if no or little money becomes available the the club and its fans will have been cheated , i renew my ticket every season because i cant help myself but some fans will have been influenced to buy their tickets to watch players of the calibre of Anelka , the club owes it to the fans to bring in the best players they can afford.

"We will continue with our ongoing transfer strategy"

Is this the strategy that has failed to sign us a decent centre half, inspite of the fact that after each of the away performances at City, Liverpool, Everton and Sunderland,(13 goals conceded(, Megson criticised the unsatisfactory defending , added to which he has known all season that Meite would be off to the ANC in January.

I fully expected us to have a centre half lined up immediately the window opened who would be ready to play in the FA Cup to get used to the team prior to the Blackburn game.

As regards the sale of Anelka being "an excellent football deal" you couldnt make it up. Selling your one and only world class player for a pittance with no replacement lined up, this is surely football genius!!!!

Why is anyone surprised that Anelka has left Bolton? That's not having a pop at BWFC- his track record suggests that he never stays longer than 1 to 2 years at ANY club- surely the board, management and fans were aware of his reputation before he signed. At least we are in a better position than Man City- they paid 12 M for him and got 8M; we paid 8M and got 15M- good business in 18 months. Which other clubs in the prem would have turned that down apart from big four? Even Spurs cannot resist a bid for Berbatov from Man U if it comes. I read this forum every day and have realised that football is now just like the rest of life- money-obsessed, quick fixes, fleeting reputations based on very little effort or evidence, in short mediocity is king.
I did not regard Anelka as some kind of messiah- seriously, has BWFC been a better team since his arrival? How did we manage before he arrived? It seems to me that the team played more as a team of equals without him and with more spirit. Hopefully some young, hungry and exciting signings with the transfer fee- especially in midfield. Dzemali has probably been the biggest loss this season- that hardly gets a mention.

very true, but his head isnt up his ar*e, its somewhere on a exotic island that the money for anelka will pay for, when we can then use the remaining 50,000 to buy a 35 year old striker and then mould him into a shocking left back

I feel the need to respond to this ridiculous comment...

If Megson was that desperate to keep Anelka, he wouldn't have gone. He's the manager for goodness sake - of course he has influence. As for his press conference, he's come out with the same drivel that Gartside has...the bottom line is he's just ingratiating himself with his new best friend.

The idea that Megson "feels for the situation as much as we do" is laughable. This is the same argument that you made before - 'Megson has no power in transfers'. That's rubbish.

what is the point of supporting a club like Bolton Wanderers, you pay your £450 for a season ticket, and you know full well that the only realistic chance of winning something is in the FA cup if you have a favourable draw or the Carling cup,but the club put staying in the premiership before these cups, and they field reserve teams and we get knocked out,so the supporters can never again and I mean NEVER look forward to winning anything again, if the clubs ambition is to finish above the bottom three in the premiership then it`s not mine,if we brought a good young player through the acadamy a top club would come along a we would sell him,if a player is doing really well like Anelka a top club comes along and we sell him, theres to much money involved and the good players go were the big money is,the board want our £450 for a season ticket but then they give us no hope for the future,it`s no wonder the crowds are falling, all the supporters are fed up with the clubs and the players attitudes,do they expect us to turn up every week to watch our team just try to survive with no expectation of ever winning anything,we have a proud history in the FA cup and I`m sorry, but telling me the premiership is all important dosn`t wash,we need to look forward to something, keep our best players and have ambition then the supporters will come back,if not 15000 will be a good crowd.

There have been links with lots of players since 1st of Jan. 2 weeks in and no-one of any consequence signed. We were supposed to have around 5 million to spend before Nic money. Blackburn at home should have seen us with a couple of new defenders. Call me cynical but were we perhaps hanging on for Nic to go before buying ? We suddenly pull out of Balde deal and no more news of Icelandic defender. Smoke screens perhaps ?

I know we need another striker now, but if we had already reinforced at the back, i would have been more confident against Blackburn. Come on Ginger, get us some quality at the back !!!!

Wheather the £15m. is a good deal or not depends on how the money is spent or more likely not spent. We will never know how much the agents will get, bound to be in the £millions, (more than a decent fullback anyway) Gartside quote "The deal represents a good deal in both football and business terms". Well let's wait and see, let's see were the money will end up. Unless all the Anelka cash and more is reinvested in new players then I would recomend a mass boycott.

anelka has departed for pastures new , and good luck to him i say !!!!! i always believed that he would not be at bolton forever and that he was bought with the intention to attract other big names , then sell him on for a profit , one out of two objectives achieved . But as for the future , Well we now have money to burn in theory in order to stay in the premier league , but i doubt that this will be invested wisely . The club rarely takes risks with transfers , and the days of attracting big names seem dead and buried , many names have been linked to include - SAVIOLA , CISSE ( he is crap by the way) . but apart from money which the whites never want to part with , then why would they consider coming to a club threatened by relegation , shows little ambition , run badly , and cant even get close to filling the ground to create a buzzing atmosphere !!!! so anyone who believes that the likes of DEFOE , CROUCH , ETC , would even think that moving to the wanderers is a positive move are cleary deluded , the most likely outcome is that we will sign a few fringe players on loan till the end of the season , they just wont risk big contracts with the threat of relegation , you will find that players of the likes of - LITA , GERA , AMEOBI , KILGANNON , KING , and at best MCFADDEN or HYPPIA the most realistic outcomes !!!! You say other managers are trying to improve there teams at least let him get the anelka cash to spend its only gone thru today its obvious Gartside said you want to spend we have to sell first. Also which managers are improving there teams?
My understanding was that Megson clearly told us (presumably with PG's backing) that we DIDN'T need to sell Anelka in order to strengthen this January.

Anelka has always said if nothing concrete where to come from another club I am happy at Bolton, Gartside should have turned around before the transfer window and told all prospective clubs he is our player do not even bother to try and make an offer for his services. The board are trying to run a business on the cheap and creaming a lot of the profits. Why else have they kept so quiet since the beginning of the season trying to keep the true fans in the dark. Well im afraid when you disappoint your customers the life blood of any business, they generally talk with their feet, a fact you can see in the stands on a weekly basis, and getting worse. And please stop posting Megson out, se categorically stated he didn’t want the deal to go through what manager wants to see his star performer sold, what benefit would that have for Megson. He is just a line manager and has no say in the long run who is bought or sold , he merely suggests players he would like, and the board decide if they fit into their budget.

Megson never wanted to sell this player and feels for the situation as much as we do. Maybe try and create a comment a tad bit more intelligent next time eh??
I feel the need to respond to this ridiculous comment...

If Megson was that desperate to keep Anelka, he wouldn't have gone. He's the manager for goodness sake - of course he has influence. As for his press conference, he's come out with the same drivel that Gartside has...the bottom line is he's just ingratiating himself with his new best friend.

The idea that Megson "feels for the situation as much as we do" is laughable. This is the same argument that you made before - 'Megson has no power in transfers'. That's rubbish.

I actually feel quite sorry for you believing everything you hear. If Gartside said the same things, would you believe him. Maybe you're not so intelligent after all???
So lets get this straight..your suggesting that a new manager at the club is going to give two shi** about having 15million (of which he will see no more than 10) in his pocket at the cost of the BEST striker outside the top 4 in england. I dont believe everything i read for a second, i believe that gartside is taking this club into a recession but i do believe that megson 100% is behind the fans and is probably thinking the same as we do about gartside. At the end of the day it doesnt matter what a manager thinks, as an ''intelligent'' source stated football is certainly become more about the executive apposed to the idea that the manager has complete control of the clubs ins and outs, and i personally feel that is a very legitimate issue to support.

James i would like to commend you on your website. When the campaign first kicked off around the Megson appointment time i actually thought the website was a p*ss take. I never thought anyone could hate Gartslime as much as me but having seen the lengths that you have gone to against the FA's chief rodent i actually think you perhaps do detest him more. You could add alot more to his list of crimes to be honest. Your list on your website reads;

Lack of ambition
Under investment in the team (that was pushing for Champions League football in January 2007)
"We have no money" - but where has all the money gone from Sky and from our high final league positions?
Calling the fans "fickle"
Carling Cup Final ticket fiasco
Token gestures - such as a small price reduction on Season Tickets
Season Ticket sales reduced by 1000's

You could add;
The lies to the fans over Okocha revealed on Panarama.
Involvment with dodgy agents.
Annual lies of publishing a long list of exciting players who we are supposedly interested in at the same time as when season ticket sales are announced only to be lies.
We supposedly bid around 3 million for Henri Camara around 3-4 seasons ago pre-season he went to elsewhere Celtic i recall, that money was then never spent.
After Anelka purchase appearing on Sky talking of 10 million spent on the academy yet that's funny the Bolton News quote 3 million.
3 days before the last transfer window saying we will not sell for financial reasons - why then sell Faye 3 days later and now Anelka?? (don’t use the Faye striking argument – honour contract or rot in reserves d*ckhead)
Taking the cheap option (again) by appointing a f*ckwit like Sammy Lee to take us to the next level only to ruin 7 years of good work in 5 months.
Making the club a laughing stock with his personal and public spat with SA.
Manipulating and brainwashing his few retarded supporters that by extending Anelka's contract he was showing his ambition - i hate to say i told you so but look back in archive you f*ckwit Gartslime fans. He’s just protecting Eddie's assets.
The great share rip off, several of my family members spent a fair amount on shares only to see them rendered worthless a short time later.
I could go back to the move to Burnden although not the chairman at the time i believe he was on the board. Being told there wasnt enough room to redevelop Burnden mainly because of Normid however within a couple of months of us moving out Normid was empty and derelict.
The debt still lingering over us bearing in mind he budgets for 17th every year yet we’ve finished a lot higher for 4 seasons earning 0.5 million for every extra place up the league table.
The hotel wont interfere with footballing – complete t*ss.

I could go on and on and on and on believe me I have lots more but getting wound up going through things.

We had excellent average attendances year on years always between 17-19000 season ticket holders. Look at what is going on people have had enough!!!!!!!! Years upon years of being shat on by the scum who own and run our club. The protest is ongoing – look at the attendances.

There's a little too much hysteria about one player leaving Bolton. With a bit of guile, a lot of effort and even more team spirit, this team will stay in the prem this season: even without Anelka...

Step 1 - strengthen the defence. If you don't let goals in then you don't lose: fact. Shorty lee failed to get the quality into our defence when the really good stuff walked out of the door.

Step 2 - get organised in attack. Anelka could score fom outside of the box with reasonable reliability. Most players can't - therefore stop the players shooting unless they are in the box.

Step 3 - recognising step 2, get our defence to prioritise keeping the incoming ball out of the box.

Step 4 - start looking for a Diouf replacement now as he will walk from this club in summer 2009 citing lack of ambition as the reason that he refused to extend his contract.

Step 5 - sign a big centre back with great heading skills: essential for corners and set pieces

Step 6 - no excuses now not to sign Guthrie...except a lack of ambition

Step 7 - reduce season ticket prices by 25% - they're gonna have to to keep the numbers up. Lack of ambition is very costly.

Step 8 - stop Fartside from blaming other people when a disaster happens - better to keep quiet than look stupid.

Step 9 - don't spend big now - the Jan transfer window is usually not a great time to buy and other clubs know that Bolton now has cash to waste. Instead, plan to stay-up and rebuild this summer with the benefit of a more considered scouting approach.

I have the accounts in front of me philstyan. Please tell me where the dividend is because there isn't one. Do you people just make it up as you go along?
I see a Balance Sheet with a £22 million deficit on profit and loss account, so it would be illegal to pay a dividend. I see that
despite the losses the club spent £14 million on player registrations in its last financial year and that it spent another £5 million between July and November 2007.
Gartside and Duckworth get paid for the work they do and by most supporters standards they get paid very well. They have limited financial resources compared to the majority of Premiership clubs and have played their part
in making the period since Gartside became Chairman one of the most successful in the club's history. I wonder how much Cid, Braaten, Wilhelmsson etc.get paid for the contribution they make to the success of the club. Total staff costs were over £30 million (probably more this year) and you can safely reckon that the lion's share of that is players wages. The profit made from the sale of Anelka will provide an opportunity to try to bring in some new blood but spending millions is no guarantee of success - ask a few sacked managers. If we avoid relegation this season Gary Megson will have performed a minor miracle. He has done pretty well so far so get behind him and the team and stop this mindless **** over Phil Gartside.

Just seen Megsons interview on Skysports News, I dont think Ive ever been so depressed listening to a BWFC manager.

His whole demeanour was downnbeat virtually accepting that because Anelka wanted to go we have to accomodate him and Chelsea and in the next breath saying that we have a fee agreed with a club for a player, not a forward by the way, but his club wont let him go until they have signed a replacement, presumably this is Matt Taylor.

I didnt know we were a feeder club for Chelsea, why couldnt we have told them the same, ie OK the player wants to leave and we have agreed a fee, but you cant have him until WE have signed a replacement.

Following from this there was NOTHING positive from Megson about incoming players ie shoring up our defence or replacing Anelka with another goal scoring forward

I am sick of MY club being made a laughing stock, I dread to think what the crowd might be on Sunday, and the way things are going it is only going to get worse.

We sold Anelka but to be fair, it was pretty good business to buy for £8million and sell with a £7million proffit. We will buy players this month, and i also think that losing anelka may not be the worst thing in the world because before he came, we were doing fine.

Our team need to pull together now and work for each other. We had good finishes without Anelka in the league so we will be fine. I think our football will be extremely direct, even more so than already this season, but if it works for us to get results, then so be it.

I'd rather watch 'bad' football and win than 'good' football and lose. Bolton need results, not performances, and we are going to have to start scrapping 1-0 wins.

I think against Blackburn, the attendance will be shocking, as ever, our support has been shocking all season, which doesnt help the team.

I think that our fans should realise that it is times like this the team needs support more than ever, and our fans are failing. I don't understand why people are complaining about ticket prices because for all the reduced price cup games, for example £10-15 for adults, and £1-5 for kids, we have had attendances of 10,000-14,000. Not good enough.

I think sunday attendance will be in region of 17,000...which for a derby game at home in a big game would be awful...but thats our support for you. All the real supporters will support the club through all the bad times and show your support for the players.

So I have been watching them longer than you. I think you missed my point! If you have been a supporter all those years you would remember as I do that after Francis Lee, Wyn Davies, Peter Reid, Gary Jones, and more recently Alan Thompson, Jason Macateer,Alan Stubbs, Nathan Blake, Per Frandsen, Sasa Curcic, Eidur Gudjohnsen, Michael Ricketts were sold only fractions were reinvested in the team. Its very naive to expect the board to be any different this time. Satisfied now?

Pretty dim post this. On all kinds of levels, but I would pick out one single point to comment on. Cup attendances 'not good enough'. Yes, agree. Then think of the team he put out against Sheffield and the performance. I rest my case.

His agent is out to get the cut and will say anything to get the money - you fool!!! Another good business deal!!! How many other clubs are selling their prized assets in JANUARY - good business sense do you think???? SO much for ambition at Bolton - a fourth rate Chairman with a second rate manager - Fizzypop league here we come!!!
what you dont think anelka wanted to go? yes his agent is in for a big cut but he stated when he came he wanted champions league football if bolton had rejected chelsea offers you might have been left with a player who was not putting his effort in and collecting his wages untill the next transfer window.ps stop going on about megson your always on his case
If a player does not put the effort in then the price on his head falls. It would have been in his own interest to player the best he has been doing up until summer where he would more than likely commanded the same price as now or even more!!! I may be always on his case but has he lit the blue touch paper to reignite Bolton's passion for success or ambition - I think not he has got the team to improve (until now) but its only mediocre. At least the other new managers are trying to get their team some recognition - what is Smeghead doing??? (I know - it all comes down to Gartside but he is Gartside's puppet!!!!)
You say other managers are trying to improve there teams at least let him get the anelka cash to spend its only gone thru today its obvious Gartside said you want to spend we have to sell first. Also which managers are improving there teams?
all 750,000gbp - that is the most realistic figure Megson will have from the 15million!!!! Remember Gartside does not like givinbg money to managers to buy players!!!

I understand your point Paul and its valid, i dont beleive all the money will be re invested in players either, but its fair to say that when we bought Anelka the club made a positive signing that they should be given credit for, we will have to wait and see what happens now. I cant help being an optomist, being a wanderers fan you need to be.

I think the point about the money from the sale of past players like Thomson ,Stubbs Macateer etc is a different point really as when we sold them the money was needed for survival as our outside income was minimal.
I am looking forward to seeing Kevin Davies on sunday, if he can get good service from wilhelmson it could work for us.

How many games is Anelka going to be playing for Chelsea, this season- 5 or 6????

if they really wanted him to go/or he wanted to go them wait till we had someone, whos going to come now if we had sorted defence up at beginning of season maybe we would be pushing for europe with anelka still playing for bwfc.

Chris, you sure are an optimist. Yes some of our sales have been made under finacial pressure but we are not under any pressure now. Even if Megson is given all the money from the sale of Anelka who of any quality will come that is better than we already have? Upto now I have always thought we would survive this season but I am very worried now and the sale of Anelka is a huge gamble that I dont think the club can afford. Its typical of the club, they sold Blake two days before a crucial match without proper cover and they have done the same again. Its just plain bad management, no excuses.

There is life after Nic, but only if we start at the back when re-building the side. Centre half and left back are priority 1 and 2. If we can do that now with quality players then we can wait until summer for the scouts to do their job and find a good young striker for about 3 to 4 million. At the moment we need quality at the back. Not a 32 year old Celtic reject. Spend some money now on two defenders and save the rest for summer. Get rid of Braaten and Cid and save wages. Loan them out and see if they improve. NO MORE MIDFIELDERS APART FROM SIGNING GUTHRIE

i have supported this club home and away through much worse times than these but i hold my principles too high to go to the reebok this term. I will show my support at all the away games instead. until either a) Gartside goes and we get someone who can run a football club properly
b)he realises where he has been going so wrong and amends it asap.

for the past 5 seasons we have been getting better attendences than blackburn by about 3-4 thousand. when we played derby at home blackburn played sunderland at home, they had over 6000 more attending the game.

blackburn realised you have to insentiveise supporters to buy season tickets in the summer so they will be attending all year good or bad, because of this they reduced season ticket prices to £250 pounds. We where nearly double that price at £466! we only sold 12000 season tickets! it cosst more to buy a season ticket at bwfc than pay as you go with a membership then get a half season ticket at £20/game. this doesnt make sence. we should have realised with a new manager the sucsess may not continue so the club should have put season tickets at rock bottom prices sold maybee 16/17 thousand in the summer and those fans would have attended every game because they had a ticket.

this wouldnt have cost the club much in finance because the extra paying supporters money would out way the discount given to all. and you could make more on the day refreshments e.t.c

another thing that winds me up personally is the fact we out source the refreshment counters to de veres!!! why is this im sure none of the other premiere league clubs out source. why when we are banging on about not having enough cash do we allow other businesses to take the profits from our bars.

surely with a turnover of 40million we can run a bar!

Form Daily Mirrow

Anelka has signed a three-and-a-half year deal - with an option for an extra season - worth £87,000 a week.

The haggling between the clubs ended yesterday as Chelsea agreed an initial £12.5million fee with Bolton also getting performance-related extras.

Birch me fellow wanderer,

whilst I agree and admire yr comments, your actually indirectly fuelling Gartsides strategies...

Staying away in whatever valid protests just makes Gartside hold out re: prices (and no doubt other issues) for those of whole whom blindly buy our season tickets.....

Simple economics, if say we sold 17-20,000 season tickets, then Gartside would be presented with a more tricky problem and he would have to move......

I think he's done a fairly good job with finances, BUT dont get me wrong he lacks Vision, Ambition, Boldness.....dont think his heart lies with BWFC......

Staying away only contributes to the issues you mention.....

The situation is out of our hands. We had a player that deep down is clearly a cut above the rest of the squad, Chelsea have the money and pulling power and what got the minimum fee for him. Im really dissapointed that we didnt get a player as part of the deal, and i would prefer Saviola for 4.5 than some swede ive never heard of for 9.

"Typical Bolton"! If a crucial team member in any business wants to leave, as a manager you do your utmost to keep them! If Phil Gartside could see beyond the short-term pound signs in his eyes he would realise this. What has happened could well be disastrous to the club - how many more fans will now walk away in disgust? The fans pay good money to see a player like Anelka and have been let down badly - not for the first time by the money-grabbers at the club. Good business? We'll see what happens when we get relagated, if not this season, it will be the next. If I were an ambitious player at Bolton I would be considering my future right now, cue the loss of all our best players. Thanks Mr Gartside once again!

We haven't got 15k. We got 12k and 3k over three years depending on appearances. If Nico is on the rotation treadmill as are most players at Chelsea we might never get the 3k. We should have got 3k in the hand from the second richest man in Britain. Chelsea were desparate to sign Nico we should have demanded all the 15k in hand.

Now its up to OUR team to win on sunday without this wonderboy. I for one will not miss him, we are still in the danger zone,
Maybe just maybe???? The management will spend a few bob?.look at Newcastle and Spurs. they are no better off with all the money they have spent. Big teams pay big bucks to buy the trophies and the big time. The rest of the teams make up the numbers, and the rest of us guys pay at the turnstiles in all weathers for 90 minutes of football, just to keep the pot boiling. On Nic why we sold him GARTSIDE.

(But when a player wants to leave that is it they no longer have the best interest of the club at heart and we had to recognise that and act accordingly.)So does that mean you'll be selling jussi jaaskelainen as well in january because he still hast signed a contract yet.

I wonder if anyone, BWFC supporter or otherwise, genuinely believed that Anelka would 'honour' his contract once the prospect of Champion's League football and a healthy pay increase were dangled in front of his agent's nose? If quality signings ensue and problem positions are appropriately enhanced the deal may yet be considered to be good business.

Or is it fear that no-one else wants to invest in BWFC and soon we might not be getting the Premiership millions that is forcing the pace?

This is only a really bad deal if we get relegated because the loss will be more than £15m. However, if Anelka stayed and we still got relegated then we wouldn'tget £15m for him. Add onto that Chelsea's interest, the player's desire to leave (stated in public - not just to Fartside/Ginga) and our complete inability to get into the champions league (that was the ambition that Anelka signed-up to) then Fartside had no choice.

I have shut the LBHG campaign down. Too much apathy I am afraid.

With crowds of 18k for a local derby, what chance I have of motivating people to sign up to a campaign to oust the chairman?

It is one thing people moaning on this site, but when it came to it, (very) few people actively wanted to be involved.

Whatever people thought (and I got plenty of negative/abusive e-mails as well as supportive ones), I tried to do something, but to no avail.

It may get revived in the future, but ultimately it is apathy that keeps Gartside laughing at the fans.
