Wanderers spoil Keegan's party

Newcastle Utd 0, Wanderers 0.

WANDERERS produced a determined rearguard action to spoil Kevin Keegan's homecoming party.

On the back foot for much of the second half, they shut out the Newcastle attack, frustrating the Toon Army and denying Keegan a win on his emotional return to Tyneside.

The better side in the first half, Wanderers had to withstand much more pressure in the second as Newcastle were more threatening.

David Rozehnal and Shola Ameobi went close with headers and Ricardo Gardner and Andy O'Brien had to make vital tackles on the dangerous Ameobi. But the only save Jussi Jaaskelainen had to make was from a dipping cross by James Milner.

And Wanderers could even have snatched all three points had Shay Given not pulled off a sensational reflex save to blcok Jlloyd Samuel's shot in the last minute of normal time Newcastle Utd: Given; Carr, Taylor, Cacapa, Jose Enrique; Milner, Rozehnal, N'Zogbia, Duff; Ameobi, Owen. Subs: LuaLua for Duff 80 mins. Not used: Edgar, Troisi, Carroll, Harper.

Wanderers: Jaaskelainen; Steinsson, Andy O'Brien, Michalik, Gardner; Joey O'Brien; Guthrie, Nolan, McCann, Taylor; Davies. Subs: Campo for Nolan 67 mins, Cohen for MCCann 76 mins, Samuel for Taylor 79 mins. Not used: Stelios, Al-Habsi.

Referee: Alan Wiley (Staffs).

Attendamce: 52,250.

Great point tonight, but if that is the sum total of our attacking force, then we still have a massive problem. Can somebody also explain to me why Megson is being so bloody negative that he had one striker in the whole 16 and not one on the bench. What would happen if Kevin Davies got injured during a game? Bad management by Megson, pure and simple.

OK, BWFC- last 1. Charlotte, hope the commentary OK.

Thought Steinson looked good, Taylor a bit sloppy, but first match.

Very disappointed again with team selection and our approach to the match. Far too defensive for me, too much sitting back without the ball.

It was there for the taking had we bothered to go forward. And Im supposed to be the negative one?

Davies and Michalik best for me.

better perfomance than usual away, but newcastle were there for the taking. where was the support for davies?! at one point he flicked it on for himself at the half way line, chased it then had to take on the full back because there was still no one in support!!! why were there no attacking subs?!

Good effort this. Much better balance. V. impressed with Steinsson.Thought Nolan played well and Joey O' Brien too.Maybe Ricky had his best game for a while as did Michalik.

Felt it was there to win really and even more than before still think that if we could just have attacked them early...! However I am grateful for anything at the moment and 10 days now to figure out the big questions re the who and how to score against Fulham.

heres a piece off the newcastle forum which is pretty much the view of everyone on there...

match was a little scale & boring what happen to the players been fired up, more like fired down . Poor midfield in fact, and players out of position didnt help. Why was they a centre back playing in midfield for ? this was a little odd.

Poor attack from newcastle, and owen for captain. Did he even once try and fire the players up to play owen ? he seem that he wasn't really in it tonight.

Bolton were the better side overall, but i was expecting us to win 4-0, or at least 2-0 tonight. I didn't see a bore draw coming at all.

Keegan needs to get in the transfer market fast, and start moving some of the deadwood which played tonight out

Best player on the park by a Country mile, great debut and at long last we have a proper right full back.

Agree with Julie in that Michalik had a decent game, but for me we lacked a forward with pace, crying out for someone to run at them with the ball.

Really pleased with Steinsson & Michalick played with more confidence. Defended well against a wobbly team. But, as well as buying a replacement for Anelka (and with his pace) Bolton players need to pull the trigger in attack and not just hope that one of their teamates will do it for them.

Good result though.

Taylor took a nice penalty against us at shatton park remember!

Let's face it, 0-0 is a good result especially given the circus surrounding keegan. I don't think I counted a shot on target for them at all?

Gretar played well, showed enough and once he's settled in and drilled fully, he'll be a good buy. Taylor had a tough one, I think we need 4-4-2 now we have him as he can supply crosses to 2 good forwards but is never ever going to set the world alight with pace, so Left Mid, not Left Wing, would suit him.

not great to watch but if we get some more games like that and survive, I won't care.

And Samuel did all he had to for his chance, it was just the kind of save we've had from Jussi many times, something you hope for as a defending team but hate as the attacking.

I'm chuffed with the point and clean sheet (when was our last 0-0 away?) but agree, its so poor to not put Bratten on the bench. If Davies had gone off injured after 10 minutes we would have had Stelios up front on his own. The other awful decision was playing J O'Brien instead of Stelios in midfield. Its BASIC stuff - put good players on the pitch, leave poor players on the bench. I am getting used to the fact that Nolan will never be dropped, but this 1 striker in the whole squad and pretending O'Brien is a midfielder is taking things just too far.

I know it was a point gained and a clean sheet, but I believe it should have been more. Last week they could have lost 10 - 0 and that is no exaggeration. Same team with a different manager thats been out of the game for 5 years. Forget the hype and bullcrap about KK. They are a poor side who we could and should have beaten.

We have strengthened at the back and I know we still need more, but today we should have played with two strikers on the pitch from the word go. Newcastle are that bad !!!! We should have jumped all over their poor midfield and attacked.

Second half was worrying again as we sat back and invited attacks. They deserved no respect and we should have gone for the kill. The ginger one was over cautious today. We have some young talent up front and today would have been a good time to play one of them alongside Davies.

The perfect solution here is to make Nolan assistant manager now instead of in 5 years (which seems inevitable even at this stage). He is more a manager than a player already, if he could just get a long term injury the whole Nolan problem could be solved to the satisfaction of all concerned!

Hmmm... The vast majority of football fans across the country expected a Newcastle whitewash today, all fired up, the Keegan factor, extra 20% lift for each player and so on. On paper it was a good result HOWEVER they were there for the taking. Having weathered the first 15-20 mins which didnt take much weathering i could see that these f*ckwits were there to be chewed up and spat out however Bolton's approach in the second half was terrible. Again though on paper very happy with a draw.

Very good result!! Showed them romantic idiots on the Tyne that no Disney scenario is gonna help em out. After the absolute travesty that was the appointment of Sammy Lee and his horrendous signings,(apart from Guthrie), Megson, who if am bein honest i wasnt keen on, has helped at least scrape some dignity back with some good home results. But Lookin our attacking options today I think Stephen Hawkins might have had a chance of playin. We have defensive players in abundance so now we gotta bring in at least 2 strikers and 2 attacking midfielders. Zoltan Gera and Jan Koller are on my wish list. As well as loan aproaches for Bianchi and Babel from Liverpool. I dont really rate Jason Roberts but desperate times and all. Oh yeah Gardner should play an attacking roll from now on. He is brilliant going forward and at times pretty diabolical with his marking and passing at the back.

Completely agree about his interception. Class! But it was a rare tackle that the likes of Maldini would probably have been proud of. With Matty Taylor in the ranks I think Gardner should be pushed up. He has blistering pace and can take on anyone on his day. Plus you look back over this season he is guilty of some stupid decisions whilst defending and we have nothing going forward. Some pace and trickery is well needed. Cause Kevin Davies wont supply it! Ha!

i wouldn't of played taylor today, he aint played enough games to be ready for a game like this. and after watching the first half i would of taken taylor off before nolan. the way kev has been playing recently he was our best chance to beat nu 0-1.

the only thing that would of upset the toon more than drawing 0-0 was loosing 0-1 to sam's old team.

Well playin away at a team that has just employed their "Messiah" with a fresh feel and confidence about them. Oh and the fact we sold our best player lost Diouf and Meite to the African Nations and have no real attackers left in the squad (well, that can do anything). Then yeah it was. I already said in a previous post that I said apart from Guthrie. Should have wrote it there too. My fault. But thats one out of a host of average players. I mean we were a top seven club for the past three seasons and actually went for Keith 'friggin' Gillespie!!!! We should have been going for quality internationls. There was money to be spent but Mr Lee was too busy wantin the part as an extra in 'Willow 2!!!!' Bad appointment and for that i blame the board. So we as fans have gotta deal with it. Good, hardworking performance,Andy Obrien immense at heart of defence(player of the year to date, for me),solid debuts fron our new signings, especially Steinsson-excellent distribution and concentration and eager to get forward to try to help up front.Routine night for Jussi-one tip over from a tricky cross, about it.Mixed performance from Wiley, the referee-did well to wave away at least six hysterical and laughable penalty shouts, ignored two dangerous and premeditated elbows on Michalik by Ameobi but penalised the defender a few minutes later when he got a bit of his own back, similarly Davies, working manfully up front,on his own, ,receiving no protection from referees,no whinging from him,as usual, despite regularly being prnalised himself-this happens week in and week out.The spirit shown by the team reminded me in parts of the backs to the wall, against the odds ,performance in Munich.Funny to see the dawning realisation on those Geordie faces, with their cheap cardboard crowns that 'King Kevin'will be yet another chapter in their saga of decline-"He is not the Messiah,he's a very silly boy" Let's hope we can get a bit of pace and guile in midfield this week and a striker with similar qualities.

It's obvious what Andranik has to do to get in the prem team: must come off the bench with five minutes to go against Atletico Madrid away, then score four goals, clear six off the line, make three more chances for others to miss, and get between penalty areas at the speed of light. No prob.

What was the point of buying two good players, but then using them to replace the players who have been amongst our best this season?!! We would have won yesterday with a more adventurous approach once we'd quelled the atmosphere.

We need to buy TWO pacy strikers....and then pick the right team and adopt attacking tactics where practical!

A much more solid performance but no attacking ambition and still only one sniff of a goal.

Where were the "attacking" midfielders on the three or four occasions Davies headed the ball into good areas in the opposition penalty area?

Could someone please explain to Mr Megson/Captain Kev that when we are defending with 10 plus the goalkeeper in and around the box and we punt the ball upfield the inevitable consequence is that it will come straight back at us.

The only real pressure from Newcastle was self imposed.

fernando, bolton says...
11:53am Sun 20 Jan 08

Good solid defending. Good away point. May be on paper ! But what I saw was a Bolton team that put ten men behind the ball against the worst team in the division for the last 3 months. I am not blaming the players because they were told how to play.

Kevin Davies must think his arm pits smell, because nobody will run up to support him. We are 15th, but only 1 point abocve the drop. When the other teams around us get beaten we dont take advantage. One game could put us back in the bottom 3.

Come on Ginger, show some bottle. Against that pile of crap yesterday we should have won. We will not escape with negative tactics. Use the young strikers, put some pace in the middle of the park because if it goes to the last game of the season then the we all know what will happen at Chelsea.

Glad we spoiled the party but have to agree with King Eric, Julie et al. Newcastle were there for the taking. It was fairly obvious on paper and for certain after the first five mins. Stelios or Andranik would have scored and won the game for us if Megson had realised this too. Unfortunately he was too scared of losing understandably I suppose. Great to finally see some organisation in defence and the lack of panic and chaos but a hell of a disappointment after driving all that way and esp returning in the monsoon on the way home.

This just totally sums up the whole point why there is only 3/4 teams challenging for the title, MONEY the root of all evil concerning the Premiership football that is our game today, as soon as a Bolton who have an Anelka in their team, then the big bully boys come along and take him, money no object, Jack Walker bought the title years ago and now with the threat of relegation for teams in the lower reaches of the league then people/supporters are wondering WHY defensive ploys are being used.

We had one person who loved attacking football and that is why we are down at the bottom . ( sammy lee) . We have to play to are strengths , and dont have 30 million to throw at one player . sammy lee didnt put us at the bottom of the league because he loved attacking football, he was just bobbins. he played 4 slow centre midfielders in a 442, and had no idea at the back. if someone who actually had some kind of tactical skill had come in and made us play more atacking it would have worked

Just to name a few, people like Kelly, McAteer, Jensen, Johansen, Frandsen, Steve Thompson, were proper midfielders because they could pass long or short, were creative, took good corners and free kicks, shoot from distance (I'm sure you remember when such a thing was a feature of most of our games). O'Brien can pass it upto 10 yards, but like Nolan when looking further than this it becomes a big boot upfield, no guile or class. I just dont understand what O'Brien brings to the side that justifies leaving so many players sat in the stands. Let's be serious, O'Brien instead of Stelios or Andranik???

Re Joey O' Brien: It's strange that we all seem to see different things!

I'm in 'on's' camp here.

Although he's not yet fully fit, I saw yesterday a player with a snappy tackle who almost always wins the ball and then passes it 10 yds to a colleague and then moves into a position to receive it back. It's unflashy but effective. Yesterday in the first half hour I felt we passed the ball around in neat triangles much more than we usually do and he was often the apex.He allowed Steinsson the security of advancing much further up the right wing than we have seen either J O'B himself or Hunt do for quite a while. In fact J O'B and Steinsson on the right and Ricky G and Taylor on the left ( in this case after the first half hour) gave us a lot better balance and allowed Nolan to control defensively a lot of what happened in
midfield.Joey O'B is well short of being the finished article but he's alot more Makalelelesque than anyone else we've tried there. He can pass quickly and bring others into the game. He can get forward too and yet tackle back quickly when he loses the ball..one very good example yesterday.

In contrast yesterday I thought McCann, although, making some good challenges also made some quite poor passes.

If the argument, howewever, is that Joey O'B, McCann and Nolan together ad then subsequently Joey O'B, McCann and Campo was too defensive against that poor Newcastle side, I agree. I'd far rather have seen Andranik for McCann.

Re the 20 players, if Jon means we have had superior forward moving, attacking midfielders than we have at present, then I agree and although it's difficult to compare across generations : Roy Greaves,Ray Train, Peter Reid, Jason McAteer and maybe Jeff Chandler would head my list. If he means strong tackling, poor passing, intimidating defensive midfielders, pre premier league, then I'm struggling. I might, to anticipated general derision, allow Julian Darby a mention.

If he means midfielders who can rake long sweeping Campo style passes around accurately and I'm not allowed Alan Thompson I'm struggling again. Paul Comstive could hit a sweet left footer from time to time. I suppose Richard Sneekes wasn't bad at it.

If he means converted centre halves who could set up a barrier in midfield, then Paul Jones ( a couple of times, once in an away cup game at Huddersfield I recall) and Alan Stubbs
memorably for me in away games v Preston and Leicester are good examples.

Of all of these Stubbs is the only one who played in the premier league who I recall doing snappy interceptions and passing short ( and he of course from the back could sweep it long as well)

So, and I'm sure others may help my memory here, I'm afraid I can't get near to a total of 20 pre-premier league players who are comparable to Joey O'B and superior.

I say 'let's give him a chance'- he's played the role for BWFC well a handful of times, most notably in UEFA last time around. He also was very efffective midfielder on loan outside the premier league with (??Sheff Wed/Utd?)- and may just be quite an asset in times to come.

Hope its true! We can then spend more on midfield and up front.... Before anyone says we have loads of midfielders, I agree ... But we dont have any quality in the centre apart from Guthrie. We have to start playing out of defence instead of just kicking it up field just to have it straight back.

Shocking - contrary to the wider optimism on here I thought yesterday was worrying and pish poor. I read a review of it this morning saying it was a wake up for KK in that his was one of two extremely poor teams miles off the top pack. Agree , we were toothless in the extreme. Re midfielders we are definitely getting there. I read Neil Redfearn's autobiography last year so should have got him.
Mention of Chris Thompson recalls the arguably better Steve Thompson- I always quite liked him. Going back further Brian Bromley and Ian Seddon always took my eye, especially the former-though we tended to regard them as inside forwards rather than midfielders then. Dave Lennard was another.

In the 90s Tony Kelly is worth a mention as one of the best passers we ever saw. So too John Sheridan and Mark Patterson

I'm not sure that Warwick Rimmer counts. His immaculate period was in the centre of defence- sweeping behind aerial strong centre halves.

We are now nudging 20- pre premier league midfielders ,but very few of the ones who have crept to the fore of our collective memories were the type of midfielder who is comparable to Joey O'B now or potentially.Maybe Mark Patterson is quite close. In his best period he was excellent.Tony Henry too had strengths.

Maybe Joey is just one of whose style just isn't eye-catching either for crunching tackles, sweeping passes or speedy runs and dribbles.

Best of all those mentioned on this thread, of premier league class and whilst with BWFC?

For me : 2nd Peter Reid, though better still with Everton but above all Roy Greaves.

You have hit the nail on the head - Megson has a "not losing games" mentality and at the moment this is stifling us. I want to be supportive of Megson because I like a lot of what he does and says, but it is worrying that the O'Briens, Davies's and Nolans are 1st on the teamsheet while flair players cant even get on the bench. I was very concerned to read yesterday that any new striker would have to dislodge Davies from the team. That sounds like 1. We're going to be playing with 1 up front for the rest of the season and 2. Megson is not confident of signing a better striker than our 1 goal in 20 games target man.
