WANDERERS are preparing a make a sensational bid to bring Eidur Gudjohnsen back to the Reebok.

Gary Megson, who expects to complete the signing of Aston Villa defender Gary Cahill today, now wants the Barcelona star to spearhead Bolton's survival bid.

The club have not yet spoken directly to the Icelandic striker, but are desperately trying to gauge whether he would consider a return before the transfer window closes on Thursday.

Fans' favourite Gudjohnsen, who scored 26 goals in 73 appearances for Wanderers after joining from PSV in 1998, is unsettled in Spain. And Megson sees the 29-year-old as the ideal replacement for Nicolas Anelka, who joined Chelsea in a £15million switch.

"We've looked at it to see if we can do something," said Megson, of the player who moved to the Nou Camp from Chelsea for £8m in June 2006.

"It's a big ask but, if it suited everybody, we would like to do it."
