Chung-Yong plans a flying finish

CHUNG-YONG Lee is hoping to end the season on a high, now that Wanderers’ hectic fixture list has finally relented.

The young winger has played virtually non stop since the end of March last year, stringing together the K-League campaign with the start of the Premier League in August.

It means he has racked up well over 50 games for FC Seoul, South Korea and the Wanderers, doubling the highest number he had played before arriving on English shores.

But despite the heavy workload, Chung-Yong is in no mood for a rest, knowing that the World Cup is also looming large.

“As I will play once in a week towards the end of the season, I will have less pressure on my physical condition,” said the talented star whose status as a Wanderers hero is underlined at home games when his face is emblazoned across an emormous banner hanging from the stands. “I can move around in better shape and that means I am likely to get better results.”

Chung-Yong has eight assists to his name this season, a statistic he ranks above the five goals he has also scored in his first season at the Reebok.

He had a hand in Fabrice Muamba’s first strike for the club against Wigan on Saturday and is happy to continue as Wanderers’ main supply line for the remaining eight games.

“I have still to get a thank-you from Fabrice,” he said. “But I’m just really happy for him to score his debut goal at Bolton.

“No I hope that more goals will flow for him because he has been playing well.

“It doesn’t matter who scores the goals as long as we win. If the team loses, then I’m disappointed, even if I played well. I feel like we have more energy when we win.

“Being a winger I get as much pleasure helping my team-mates score as I do when I hit the net myself.”

Wanderers have won three of their last four games to force their way away from the relegation zone, but they now face a difficult run of games against four teams in the top nine.

Starting with Everton on Saturday, Owen Coyle’s men also have to face Manchester United, Chelsea and Aston Villa before their trip to Stoke City in mid-April.

But Chung-Yong is confident that the Whites can keep the points column ticking over in the coming weeks.

“We have to organise more solidly. But if we play like we did against Wigan, we can win,” he said.
