Amir plays his part in Wanderers revival

AMIR Khan is claiming an assist in turning round Wanderers’ fortunes on the pitch.

Bolton’s WBA light-welterweight champion revealed that a pep talk given at the Whites’ Euxton training ground last month coincided with Owen Coyle’s men winning three of their last four games.

And Khan believes Wanderers will now go on to secure their Premier League status for a 10th successive season.

“I went to see the team the other week at the training ground,” he said. “I showed them my belt. They were happy to see me and I’m sure it gave them that motivation.

“I had a little chat with them and told them that I’ve tasted defeat, but I came back to become a world champion so I’m sure these guys can stay up this season.”

Meanwhile, Wanderers youngster Chris Stokes has been urged to build on his professional debut.

The 19-year-old defender featured for Crewe against Torquay on Saturday, 24 hours after signing for the League Two club on loan.

Railwaymen boss Dario Gradi has signalled his intent to keep him in the team to face Notts County this weekend, with a view to offering him a deal in the summer.

“Bringing Chris in has given us a chance to take a look at him and for him to play some competitive games, said Gradi.

“I don’t know what his future is because Bolton have not given me any indication that they are willing to let him go in the summer.

“I think that both parties will benefit over the month but he knows he has to earn his place in the team.”
