Manchester City Res 1 Wanderers Res 1 (Wanderers won 5-4 on penalties)

GOALKEEPER Rob Lainton was the shoot-out king as he saved Kieran Trippier’s penalty to keep alive Wanderers’ Manchester Senior Cup hopes.

Aaron Mooy, Adam Blakeman, Ricardo Vaz Te, Zolton Harsanyi and Rhys Bennett all converted their spot-kicks at Sport City, before Lainton flung himself to his right to deny Trippier and seal a hard-fought victory for John Henry’s young side.

Sam Sheridan had put Wanderers in front on 13 minutes after charging down Ben Mee’s clearance. The ball broke to Vaz Te, he back-heeled it back into the path of the midfielder, who had continued his run into the area, and he slotted home.

City’s Alex Nimbley scuffed a shot against the post three minutes later before Mee should have atoned for his earlier error, but the defender headed badly wide from six-yards out.

Nimbley flashed a shot just wide on the half-hour mark and the lively Blues striker fired straight at Lainton soon after.

The chances continued to flow and Vaz Te forced a good save from Tobias Johansen with a towering header. But the hosts were level just four minutes after the restart when Mooy tripped Robbie Mak inside the penalty area and Andrew Tutte made no mistake from the spot.

Harsanyi wasted a great chance to win it for Wanderers in normal time when the impressive Vaz Te picked him out, but the Slovakian shot tamely at Johansen.

But Bolton were indebted to a superb double save from Lainton to deny Dedryck Boyata twice and send the tie to penalties.
