OWEN Coyle insists Wanderers must keep their feet on the ground despite the run of form that has seen them put clear daylight between themselves and the relegation race.
The Whites head to Goodison Park on Saturday to take on an Everton side who are making a late dash for European qualification with their recent-season results.
And while Coyle is pleased his side have taken three wins from their last four to get themselves eight points clear of the bottom three, he refuses to ignore the primary objective that saw him land the Reebok job in the first place.
“No-one is more optimistic than me, but my task hasn’t changed in my eyes, and that’s to make sure this club stays out of the bottom three,” he said.
“It was important that we picked up points from the last four games, no doubt about it, but I still think there is work to be done.
“Once we have achieved what we want to do, and that’s get this club safe, then we can start looking at all the other things, including the summer and putting our own stamp on the place.
“But until that happens we have to keep a focus about our play, starting with Saturday at Everton.”
Coyle has welcomed Gary Cahill back into full training this week and can also count on a fully-fit Mark Davies for the trip to Merseyside.
Sam Ricketts also returns from suspension, giving the manager more scope to shuffle his squad than he has been used to in recent weeks.
“It has been difficult with all the injuries and suspension but I must say, the lads have got on with it and done a terrific job,” he said.
“In the back four, Sam Ricketts has been excellent, and Andy O’Brien did a great job for me last week too.
“It shows that we have got a good unit of players here who are all committed to the cause, and that’s to make sure we get out of the dangerous position we are still in.”
Mark Davies has not figured since picking up an ankle injury against Blackburn nearly a month ago.
And Coyle is welcoming the chance to seeing him back in action after being impressed with the fleeting glimpses he has had of the 22-year-old so far.
“He’s such a promising player,” said the Whites boss. “We have got high hopes for him and I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do in the long term for this football club.”
