Danny boy gets chance to shine

OWEN Coyle will give Danny Ward the chance to force his way into his plans on Wanderers’ pre-season trip to America.

The young striker impressed on loan at Swindon last season – scoring nine times in 32 appearances for the League One outfit.

A host of clubs have approached Wanderers about signing the 18-year-old on a temporary basis again this term.

But Coyle wants to see the former Leeds United trainee up close before deciding whether he has a role to play at the Reebok this season.

“I am going to have a right good look at him, which is only fair,” said the Wanderers manager.

“He did very well at Swindon last year. There has been about 10 enquiries for Danny to go out on loan again.

“What I have said to them all is that I am going to have a look at Danny to see if he is going to be involved in my first team.

“Having made that decision I will take it from there. It’s only fair.

“I want young players in my team and Danny has got an opportunity to do that.

“Ultimately, it’s up to him how well he does.”

Another youngster who will have the chance to catch Coyle’s eye in the USA will be Gilbert Alvarez. The Bolivian hitman has been invited to join up with the squad, who jet out at the end of this week, and could play in some of the warm-up games.

Coyle has been tracking the 18-year-old Callejas star for a while and hopes to complete a move for him if he shines.

He said: “He is talented and young. I am always loathed to speak about these players because at the end of the day we are not Real Madrid or Barcelona, and bigger clubs can come in and undo all your good work.

“But it’s fair to say we have an interest in him. He has represented Bolivia already at senior international level and he is a talented young player that I like.

“He has a bit of everything. Hopefully, if we can get a chance to work with him for 10 days or so on a daily basis, then we can see if he is at the level we think he is.”

One player who does not have a future at Wanderers is Aaron Mooy, aged 19, after the Australian midfielder turned down a new contract. He will now look for a new club in Europe.

Defender Gary Cahill, meanwhile, is rumoured to be a £15million target for Manchester United.
