ZAT Knight says the return from injury of Sean Davis and Joey O’Brien is like signing two new players.
Former Manchester City winger Martin Petrov and ex-Burnley forward Robbie Blake are the only fresh faces at the Reebok so far this summer with Owen Coyle keen to add to this as he looks to bolster Wanderers’ squad ahead of the opening game of the season against Fulham on August 14.
But Knight insists Davis and O’Brien are like new arrivals after being fit again following long-term lay-offs with knee problems.
The big defender is particularly pleased for old pal Davis. The pair are close friends and used to live together during their Fulham days.
“Joey and Sean are like new signings and, hopefully, they can both have strong pre-seasons and push for a starting place,” said Knight.
“I have known Sean for many years and I have felt sorry for him because you do want to play and be in the team with your friends.
“As team-mates every one of us are friends but with us two going back a long way, living and playing together at Fulham, then I have a strong allegiance with him.
“You want to see your friends do well and he has looked good over the last four days.”
Knight has also been impressed with Petrov and Blake. The 29-year-old added: “Blakey knows the management staff well and he has slotted in to the squad with ease because there is a real togetherness here.
“A lot of the people have said to me that Martin is a great signing for the club, and I agree because he has a vast amount of experience and pedigree which I believe will help us.”
