LIAM Kay scooped the major awards as Leigh Centurions celebrated a record-breaking season with a glittering Player of the Year awards evening at Leigh Sports Village on Friday.

Kay carried off the prestigious double accolades as Players’ Player of the Year and Coach’s Player of the Year ahead of stiff competition from his teammates - who have all contributed to what is, statistically, Leigh’s best-ever season.

Paul Rowley’s side have lost only twice in 31 games in all competitions and as a worst case scenario can only lose one more.

Their previous best season was winning 39 of 43 games in the 1985-86 season under Tommy Dickens, who took over from Alex Murphy OBE as coach three months into the campaign.

42-try halfback Ryan Brierley won Young Player of the Year and fellow halfback Martyn Ridyard was both Leighlife.com and Leigh Centurions Players Association Player of the Year.

Ridyard and Kay tied for Leigh Independent Supports Association (LISA) Player of the Year.

Prop forward Jake Emmitt earned some recognition for the forwards who have laid the foundation for a memorable season when he was voted Touchdown Club Player of the Year.

Jason Donohue, Chairman of the highly successful Leigh Players Association which now has over 150 members since its launch less than a year ago, was handed the Outstanding Achievement Award by Head of Rugby Derek Beaumont.

Thomas Wood was Clubman of the Year and also won a Special Award nominated by Assistant Coach Neil Jukes.

Brierley’s try against Featherstone Rovers won LCTV Try of the Season ahead of stiff competition.

Club historian Mike Latham was honoured when Mr Beaumont closed the evening by revealing that he had been awarded Hon Life Member status of the Club after his 36 years of research culminated in the Club’s successful Heritage Numbers Launch.
