LEIGH Centurions lifted the Kingstone Press Championship League Leaders Shield in style with a thumping success over Doncaster.

Their 21st win of the regular season, combined with second-placed Bradford's late defeat at Halifax, saw Paul Rowley's side finish six points clear.

Former Doncaster player Liam Kay led the way for the hosts on a wet afternoon at Leigh Sports Village, opening the scoring before running in five tries in total and claiming two assists in a brilliant wing performance.

His first came after superb centre play from Mathias Pala, and that was followed by Adam Higson's 10th try of the season, assisted by Gregg McNally.

The visitors tried hard to respond, and pegged Centurions back to 10-4 after half-an-hour when Peter Fox touched down following wily half-back play from Paul Mennell.

Doncaster continued to pressure Leigh until the 36th minute when an error brought a Centurions scrum inside their own 20. Ridyard launched a long kick downfield and Kay twice dabbed on to touch down.

The exciting winger looked set for another score before turning the ball infield unselfishly for McNally to go over for a fourth score before the break to take a 22-4 lead into the interval.

A further three long-range tries in five minutes took the wind from Doncaster's sails after they had initially started brightly after the break.

With an attack lining up on the left, Ryan Wright and Joe McLocklan combined, only for the pass meant for Liam Welham to be swept up by Ryan Brierley, who outpaced the chasers over 80 metres.

Pala and Kay then combined from inside their own half for Kay to kick on and McNally collected his second try before a low pass from Ridyard found Kay and he showed determination, skill and speed on the wet surface to finish from 70 metres.

With Ridyard continuing his good form with the boot, Leigh led 40-4 but more was to come from the Centurions.

Mickey Higham was excellent, adding guile and style in equal measure from dummy half. His pass found Gareth Hock for his fifth try of the season and he also crafted a score for Ridyard to bring up 50 points.

Ridyard kicked a 40-20 but Doncaster held firm, having earlier seen a Lelauloto Tagaloa try disallowed after the big man was judged not to have grounded properly.

Leigh's response was clinical with Ridyard intercepting a stray ball and linking for Kay's fourth before Welham pulled a try back for Doncaster following good work from Wright and Curtis Naughton goaled.

The Centurions finished strongly with Ben Reynolds sailing over from a scrum play 20 metres out and then Kay adding a spectacular fifth in the final minute thanks to the delivery of McNally.

Jake Emmitt missed his conversion attempt from the touchline, but it did not matter as the Centurions were presented with the Shield for the second successive year having finished their home campaign unbeaten.
