LEIGH’S opening tie of the 2016 Ladbrokes Challenge Cup has revived memories of one of the club’s darkest days.

Last season’s competition giant killers will launch their bid for a Wembley final date in August against Kingstone Press Championship rivals, Workington Town.

But Centurions aren’t contemplating a repeat of a 94-4 humiliation at Derwent Park in 1995; Dean Marwood plundering 42 points.

Instead, they will hope the fourth round tie, to be played on the weekend of March 19-20, can launch a repeat of last season’s thrilling giant-killing run only halted by Warrington Wolves.

Owner Derek Beaumont has previously thrown down the gauntlet for his team to improve on quarter-final appearances in each of the last two seasons.

Legends Adrian Morley and Paul Wellens made the draw at the White Lion in Swinton, the club’s spiritual home.

The full draw is: Batley Bulldogs v Whitehaven, Hunslet v Doncaster, Sheffield Eagles v Swinton, Featherstone Lions v Lock Lane, Oldham v Kells, Rochdale Hornets v Siddal, Pilkington Recs v Halifax, Dewsbury Rams v Bradford Bulls, Leigh v Workington Town, York v Keighley Cougars, London Broncos v Featherstone Rovers, Toulouse Olympique v University of Gloucester All Golds.

Coach Neil Jukes, simply pleased to have a home draw, has, however, shelved cup talk for the next fortnight.

Centurions’ Championship form remains patchy, underlined by last Sunday’s 32-all draw at Bradford from a winning 32-6 lead with 15 minutes remaining.

Second placed Sheffield Eagles are Sunday’s visitors to Leigh Sports Village having won three and lost one of their opening four games. Leigh’s 52-16 victory when the sides last met was their only win of the Middle 8’s in 2015.

Rangi Chase is again a doubt to face the Yorkshire club while fellow pivot, Martyn Ridyard, is definitely ruled out as the club’s injury crisis shows no sign of easing.

As a result, Jukes has recruited former Castleford star, Richard Owen from Wakefield and Lewis Charnock from St Helens.

“I have done some deep digging on both, not just as players but as characters,” said Jukes of winger Owen and half back/hooker, Charnock.

“They are strong characters.

“But for me it doesn’t matter who you are it’s about having good attitude and I want that around the place.

“I’ve said to the players I want to go home on a Sunday tea time feeling really happy.

“And I haven’t been able to do that yet.

“I just wish we could have played on Monday night and gone home happy on Monday night.

“The start of the (Bradford) video wasn’t great because we showed all the bits from the last 18 minutes,” said Jukes .

“But the rest of it was pretty good because we did well for 60 minutes or so which is one of our biggest periods all year.

“If you are not on top of your game you will get beaten. Sheffield are full-time this year but lost against Batley who are part time.”

Leigh legend, Alex Murphy is guest speaker in the Premier Club before Sunday’s game.
