Gregg McNally scored a first half hat-trick and Adam Higson bagged a second half treble as Leigh collected the Kingstone Press Championship League Leaders Shield in fitting manner.

Next time out against Salford in the Middle 8’s it will be a lot tougher but for now Neil Jukes’ Centurions did all asked of them in their final regular season fixture.

And the 10-try rout of the Rams was the perfect way to round off another busy week of comings and goings at Leigh Sports Village.

Indeed, victory was achieved without the likes of Gaz Hock, Liam Kay, Lee Smith, Tom Armstrong, Travis Burns and Richard Whiting.

“I am really pleased because it’s the first time this year we have nilled a team,” said coach Jukes.

“I didn’t want to use this as just our last game. I wanted to use the build up as part of our Middle 8’s block and be hard in everything we did.”

Kay, confirmed as one of Toronto Wolfpack’s first initial signings, missed this demolition of Dewsbury through injury.

But Matty Dawson, signed on a two-and-a-half-year contract from St Helens, was a ready made replacement and made his debut for the club as did veteran forward Danny Tickle.

And when it gets to the Middle 8’s and games against: Salford, Hull KR, Leeds, Huddersfield, London Broncos, Batley and Featherstone, Centurions will be able to call on the services of Australian utility back, Mitch Brown.

With such riches at their disposal, Leigh were always going to prove too strong for Dewsbury, the last team to win a league game at LSV back in 2013.

McNally’s hat-trick in his first home game of the year took just 15 minutes and by the end of the first quarter Centurions were already 22-0 clear.

By half-time they led 28-0 with Reni Maitua and Greg Worthington adding to McNally’s quick-fire trio of touch downs.

Dewsbury, who finish 27 points behind Leigh, fought hard but couldn’t replicate the home side’s clinical finishing.

Winger Higson crossed three times in 14 minutes while Ben Reynolds and Micky Higham joined in the rout. Martyn Ridyard kicked nine goals from 10 attempts.

All that was left was to present the Shield and look forward to a happier ending to the season than 12 months ago.

Newcomer Brown, 28, joins from Cronulla Sharks and has agreed an extended contract until the end of November 2018.

On his recruitment, Jukes said: “As Peter Sterling said recently, Mitch is a great, solid, quality player who has done a great job at every club he has been at.

“When someone of Peter Sterling's stature says that, it is a big recommendation. We want that sort of player and person in our group.”

Kay, hoping to be fit for the start of the Middle 8’s, joins Tom Armstrong on the list of players leaving at the end of the season.

“Liam was keen to join the Wolfpack, as myself and Liam already have a very strong working relationship and mutual respect," said Toronto’s ex Leigh boss, Paul Rowley.

"When I learned of his interest it was a no brainier to get his signature, knowing how much he binds a group together through his strength of character, and also his obvious talent, and determined attitude to winning.”
