TRAVIS Burns could still feature in Leigh’s final push for Super League status despite announcing his return to Australia.

But Burns, 32, is unlikely to feature when Centurions continue their unbeaten Middle 8s campaign at former club, Hull KR on Saturday.

The on-loan St Helens half back, yet to feature since the end of the regular campaign because of a calf injury, is joining Queensland Super Cup side, Wynnum Manly for 2017.

However, Leigh boss Neil Jukes hasn’t ruled out giving the Australian half back a final fling in England.

“Travis is training and has done everything with us,” confirmed Jukes.

“He has a couple of little niggles, but nothing major. However, there is no point getting someone out there if that small injury has the potential of coming anything longer.

“On his day Travis will come up with some really big plays. However, it is important at this stage of the season that whoever is in the squad is ready to go.

“It is not a case of throwing people out there because of the names. But 100 percent he could play before the end of the season.”

Burns has made six appearances for Leigh, including one as substitute, scoring two tries and kicking four goals.

“It is the right time to move back home and take up a new challenge,” he said about his future plans.

“My wife and kids have followed me followed me around for several years and now it’s time to put them first.”

Leigh’s bid for a fourth successive Middle 8s win is likely to be boosted by a clean bill of health for Fuifui Moimoi (hamstring) and Dayne Weston (back).

For Jukes, the trip to Craven Park will be his first for a while but he knows it can be an intimidating place to play.

“Potentially, it’s our toughest match of the Middle 8s so far,” he says. “And it’s one of the clubs I have not been to for a number of years.

“It’s a tough place to go; a lot of coaches tell you that. We envisage it being a hostile crowd and a good atmosphere and obviously there is a lot on the line for both clubs.

“But we got to further places and a lot more hostile places than Hull KR. So, it’s not somewhere we are frightened of going.

“Besides, we will be well prepped,” added Jukes whose assistant coach, Paul Cooke, was a terrace favourite at Craven Park while Cory Paterson and Burns are Rovers’ old boys.

“Hull KR have some very god individuals and they have a smart coach in James Webster and if they play their best game they are going to be a tough nut to crack,” he added.

“So, the challenge for us is to play our best game and give ourselves the best chance. If we are a little bit off they will not just beat us they will annihilate us.

“While there is a little bit less pressure and a little less expectation we have got to come up with the right performance to keep us in the game.”
