LEIGH Centurions reported back for pre season training on Thursday with two new recruits in their ranks.

But a couple of Centurions stars have already stolen a march on their team mates in the fitness stakes.

Ben Crooks, on a season long loan from Castleford, and Ryan Hampshire from Wigan have joined Neil Jukes’ squad in the past week in readiness for next season’s assault on Super League.

In addition, Josh Drinkwater and Atelea Vea have already reported back in order to return to Australia for Christmas a week early.

“We have got two fitness testing days this week and then will hit the ground running on Monday,” said Jukes.

‘Josh and Tils will finish one week earlier so it is important they get the same volume of training as the rest of the guys.”

Hooker Liam Hood was excused training by Scotland in order to attend the start of a massive pre season for the top flight newcomers.

But he will return for tomorrow’s Four Nations game with holders New Zealand at Workington and then receive a break following his international stint.

“Both with staff and the playing roster, it’s the biggest turnover we have had since I have been at the club,” added Jukes.

“So, it’s important we get some combinations working together and get the best out of every individual and find a style of play that suits this group of players.

“We must make sure come February 10, we all understand each other and we all know what is expected individually and as a team.”

February 10 signals Leigh’s first Super League fixture since 2005 and for Crooks an immediate chance to show his credentials to parent club, Castleford.

The game also pits the Championship winners against 2015 Man of Steel, Zak Hardaker whose move from Leeds to Wheldon Road-initially on loan- was completed this week.

“Ben is a deal I tried to do last season but Cas were reluctant because of their injuries,” explained Jukes.

“It’s a big year for him as a player and us as a club.

“He still thinks he has a lot to prove so I felt it was a good fit for both parties.

“It’s our job as coaches to get some good consistency and hopefully find the form he had a few years ago.

“But he also did a good job for Cas last season and played a significant number of games for a side that finished fifth in the table.”

Ex-Hull FC centre Crooks, 23, was a member of Super League’s Dream Team in 2013 before spending a spell Down Under with Parramatta.

Versatile back Hampshire was a team mate at the Tigers last season and another looking to take his career to the next level.

“Ryan doesn’t want to be known as a Jack of all Trades he wants to be a master if one,” said Jukes.

“So, again it’s up to us to work with him and get the best out of him.

“It’s important we add some youth and energy to our team but also some experience as well.

“We will focus on the 27 players we have got at the moment and if we do bring anyone else in, it will just be one more.”

Leigh have yet to confirm their pre season playing schedule but will spend a week warm weather training in Lanzarote early in the New Year.

*Leigh will have separate main sponsors next season for their home (Cal Sameday) and away (Slater & Gordon Lawyers) shirts. Kukri Sports will continue to supply home and away kits for 2017.
