SIX club records fall in an exciting afternoon athletics.

Leigh Harriers young athletes gave some outstanding performances in the third Young Athletes Development Upper division 2 league; with only a small squad to take on the other teams in the league and the prospect of a tough day, the team excelled and won second place, keeping their hopes of promotion alive.

The boys team won eight first places with the girls team winning six firsts. Joe Senior had a perfect record over the afternoon winning the 400 mts 55.7 sec, Shot 9.55 mts, Hammer 24.12 mts and ran the fastest leg on the winning 4 x 400 mts relay.

Josh Knox also was also on top form, winning multi events 1st Discus 31.02 mts, Javelin 1st 35.35 mts, Hammer 6k 30.25 mts, for 1st place. Kristian Wade doubled up and competed in the 800 mts and 1500 mts finishing 2nd in the 800 mts 3rd in the 1500 mts 4:26.3; Joseph Wane won the B 800 mts 2:15.0, 3rd in the 3000 mts 10:58 and 2nd in the High Jump 1.35 mts.

Nathan Myers won two second places, 400 mts 59.4 sec and Long Jump 4.56 mts. Roch Muala Makalele was 2nd in the 100 mts 12.2 sec, 5th in the 200 mts 24.8 sec and 4th in the Long Jump 4.69 mts. Josh Pardoe placed 5th in the 100 mts 12.3 sec, 2nd in the 200 mts 25.3 sec and in the high jump no results available.

The men’s team finished a good day winning both the 4 x 100 mts 49.2 sec and the 4 x 400 mts 4:17.0 sec.

The women’s team started the day with Ella Unsworth starting the day by winning the 100 mts 13.1 sec, 2nd in the 200 mts 27.1 sec. Keely Hodgkinson broke the club U17 Ladies 300 mts record taking second place in a time of 41.7 sec; Keely also won the 200 mts in 26.7 sec.

Emily Lewtas also broke the club record in the Javelin competition throwing 28.46 mts and finishing in 3rd place, she was also 1st in the B Hammer 26.74 mts, and 5th in the Shot 8.24 mts; new to the team Ellen Senior made her debut in the shot throwing 7.09 mts for 2nd B. Jess Arnison not to be left out threw 35.22 mts in the Hammer - a club record! She was also 2nd in the Discus 22.36 mts and Javelin 18.65 mts.

Emma McIntyre was 2nd in the 300 mts 46.3 sec, 5th in the long jump 3.76 mts and a member of the winning 4 x 300 mts relay team. Ciara Treanor ran a personal best time in the 800 mts of 2:33.8, Leah Kinsella was 1st in the Hammer 15.96 mts, 5th in the Shot Put 8.24 mts and 5th in the Triple Jump 7.09 mts. Emily Touhey was 3rd in the 100 mts 14.4 sec and 5th in the 200 mts.

The girls provided a good finish to the afternoon battling to 3rd in the 4 x 100 mts 56.3 sec winning the final event the 4 x 300 mts in a time of 3:02 .9 sec.

The next match is at Stanley Park Blackpool 23rd July, when a full squad could possibly win promotion!

Central Lancs Grand Prix

Leigh Harriers ladies took the honours at the Central Lancs Road race Grand Prix League at Horwich on Wednesday.

The five mile race, over a testing two lap course, saw Laura Riches win her third race of the series running a winning time of 31:27 and 17th place overall. Olivia Stones running in the U20 women’s race won her 4th race in the series finishing first U20 and second woman overall in the race with a time of 32:48; Susanne Smith was 41st lady in 42:45 with the Leigh ladies team finishing in 2nd place.

Neil Pendlebury made a welcome return to racing after a long spell out with injury, he finished the race in an outstanding 3rd place in 27:21, Dave Smith 2nd O40 man in overall 5th place 28:43.

Other good team runs came from Alan Smith 52nd 34:55, Dave Pollitt 5th O50 35:44, Andy Smalley 37:51, Angela Pike 2nd over 60 52:21, Diane Denny 55:21.

In the Manchester Mile at Sportcity on Wednesday U17 Ben McLaughlin set a new personal best time of 4:42.92 and finished 2nd place in the race.

In the English Schools North West Regional Combined Events Championships at Telford, Leigh Harrier Sanna McLean, representing Greater Manchester,- had an outstanding run of events in the Intermediate girls Heptathlon; Sanna won 3rd place in the competition breaking the club record with a total of 4074 points, her events were 80 mts hurdles 12.5 secs, High Jump 1.44 mts, Shot 10.94 mts (club record), 200 mts 27.6 sec, Long Jump 5.01 mts, Javelin 26.50 mts and the final killer event for the Heptathletes - the 800 mts - in 2:39.4.

Karan Kappor- Walton in his first attempt at an Intermediate Octathlon scored a respectable 3284 points - Long Jump 4.46 mts, Discus 22.01 mts, Javelin 24.63 mts, 400 mts 54.4 sec, 100 hurdles 16.1 sec, High Jump 1.47 mts, Shot 7.52 mts and 5:01.1 sec in the 1500 mts.

Laura Hickey started off the competition well 12.4 sec in the 80 mts hurdles 1.62 mts in the High Jump 9.53 mts in the Shot Put and 27.1 sec in the 200 mts.
