Aussie Kyle Lovett scored his first tries for the club as Leigh ended a run of four Betfred Championship defeats since beating Batley on February 11.

The former West Tigers forward touched down twice in three second half minutes as Centurions protected their own try line for a second successive game.

Full-back Peter Mata’utia also grabbed a double as Leigh’s six tries-in a game of four sin binnings-came in two spells totalling just 13 minutes.

“Some of the guys have had their best games in a Leigh shirt,” said caretaker boss Kieron Purtill. “We spoke about Sunday being fun day, let’s go play some rugby and enjoy ourselves.

“So, I am really proud of them all. They all worked hard and got their rewards.

“I said to the boys my favourite part of that game was the last minute when we defended our try line as though we needed to defend it to win the game.

“That’s what we are trying to breed-the hunger to defend that white line.”

With Ben Reynolds making a quicker than expected recovery from a knee injury, Drew Hutchison was paired with his third different half-back partner in as many games.

And the ex Rams loanee kicked all his goals as Leigh led 18-0 at the break thanks to Mata’utia’s brace and a 19th minute Harrison Hansen effort.

The game was reduced to 11 against 12 following a 45 minutes flashpoint ignited by a tackle on Sam Day.

Leigh lost Reynolds and Matty Dawson-Jones to the sin bin with Gareth Moore yellow carded for punching Reynolds.

The game re-started with a Leigh penalty and the incident placed on report.

Another skirmish for a high shot on Mata’utia led to another Centurions penalty and ultimately a fourth home try after 50 minutes.

This time Mata’utia provided the assist with Lovett profiting from the offload. Jack Owens tagged on the extras with Reynolds still on the side lines.

Dewsbury were two men down when Chris Annakin was sin binned for a professional foul and further behind on the score board when Hutchison set-up Lovett for his second try.

Reynolds returned to kick through for Ben Crooks to grab Leigh’s sixth try before adding a fourth goal to make the final score 36-0.

“Peter was outstanding and he looked like he belonged at a higher level,” added Purtill of man of the match Mata’utia. “That’s what you expect of your overseas boys when you bring them in.”

*“No real interest shown in the coaching role,” is owner Derek Beaumont’s assessment of Leigh’s search for a permanent successor to Neil Jukes.

In his programme notes for the Dewsbury game Beaumont added:” People we have approached have not been interested.”

*Prop Jack Blagborough has joined Hunslet on a month’s loan and made his debut for the League One club at Bradford.

And Larne Patrick began his spell at Workington Town-Leigh’s new dual registration club-by helping the Cumbrians to a 42-26 win.
