Leigh Centurions seeking reinforcements

LEIGH Centurions are on the lookout for front row reinforcements as injuries deepened in that position at the weekend.

Already missing were long-term absentees Ricky Bibey and Steve Nash but in the build-up to Sunday’s game against Oldham, Mike Morrison had to bow out and Chris Hill lasted a little more than 20 minutes before succumbing to a shoulder injury.

The 22-year-old faces further investigation according to head coach Ian Millward.

“The disappointing thing was we lost Chris Hill out of the game. He goes for a scan and he could be out for an extended period,” he said.

“Steve Nash had an operation on Monday and the surgeon said the operation was successful but he’s definitely out for three months.

“We’ve now got four of our front-rowers out and are very undermanned.”

Leigh continue to cast their net far and wide.

“I’m looking at trying to bring in a dual contract player if I can,” said Millward.

“I’ve been speaking to a couple of clubs and if I can I’ll hopefully bring someone in sooner rather than later.”

Although it was hardly a vintage performance from Leigh against Oldham, Millward added: “The main thing we’ve accomplished is to be winning games.”

He admitted: “Our intensity and concentration and attention to detail in the second half was a bit disappointing.

“In reflection we conceded three tries and they were all from kicks, although I thought we could have worked harder on the last couple.

“There’s still a lot of work to do.”

Centurions remain positive over full back Stuart Donlan who ‘had a couple of setbacks’ that forced him to again sit out the action, while Dave Alstead and Nick Stanton will come into contention for Sunday’s Northern Rail Cup clash at York City Knights, kick off 3pm.

Sickness forced a late adjustment on Sunday when Stanton was ruled out by the club doctor and Martyn Ridyard stepped off the bench into an alien wing position.

“He stepped up to the mark pretty good there,” said Millward, who was also impressed with two-try Steve Maden’s work.

“I’ve been really happy with Steve Maden’s pre-season. I thought he did a good job.

“I’m looking forward to him keep working on his game. There’s a real zest in him with the way he’s going about things. Hopefully he’ll keep improving.”

Adam Higson is hoping to shrug off the high tackle that forced him to leave the field against Oldham, although he must sit the regulation ‘head test’ first.

The club and Leigh Sports Village have reiterated their stance on entrance policy to the venue – it being all ticket.

Tickets are available for the next home game against Featherstone Rovers on February 14 priced at £14 adults, £7 concessions (standing) and £16/£8 (seating).

The ticket office opening hours have changed.

The office at LSV is now open 9am to 4pm on Mondays, 9am to 5pm Tuesday to Friday and 9am to noon on Saturdays.
