Hunslet Hawks 0 Leigh Centurions 44
FOUR tries in the final 15 minutes of the first half meant there was no way back for Hunslet as Leigh Centurions drew themselves level with Featherstone Roovers at the top of the Co-operative Championship.
Only an eighth-minute Jamie Ellis try converted by himself separated the sides at South Leeds Stadium on Sunday until Tommy Goulden’s 25th-minute try from a Martyn Ridyard pass was the spark for three tries in eight minutes.
When Ellis put Jimmy Taylor over with a perfectly executed kick and then Steve Maden fired home in the 33rd minute, Hunslet were on their way to an 11th successive loss. Leigh, who were without Mick Nanyn, Chris Hill and John Duffy, were not finished though as a breakway try polished off by dual registration centre Rhys Evans handed Leigh a 26-0 lead at the break.
The victory was completed by Ellis’ second try and others added by Steve Nash and Andy Thornley, although several opportunities to have built up an even more one-sided result were not taken.
Leigh: Stuart Donlan; Stegve Maden, Rhys Evans, Adam Higson, Dean McGilvray; Martyn Ridyard, Jamie Ellis; Steve Nash, Robbie Hunter-Paul, David Mills, Stuart Littler, Tommy Goulden, James Taylor. Subs: Andy Thornley, Anthony Nicholson, Sam Hopkins, Tom Armstrong.
