Widnes Vikings 18 Leigh Centurions 24
TWO more tries from the country’s leading scorer Jamie Ellis steered Leigh Centurions to another victory on Sunday.
His 28th of the season in all competitions gave Ian Millward’s men a 12-6 lead in the first half but his 29th of the campaign was more important.
With Leigh trailing by two points with 13 minutes to go at the Stobart Stadium, Ellis finished off good work from Rhys Evans and Steve Maden down the right to earn the visitors winning pay and keep them second to Featherstone on points difference in the Co-operative Championship.
Martyn Ridyard had bagged Leigh’s opening try and Mick Nanyn crossed for his side’s opening score of the second half to go with his four successful conversions from five attempts in front of the 4,732 crowd.
But most pleasing of all was the way Centurions kept Vikings scoreless in the second period, setting themselves the platform for their eighth successive victory while ending Widnes’ unbeaten seven-match run.
Leigh: Stuart Donlan; Steve Maden, Rhys Evans, Mick Nanyn, Dean McGilvray; Martyn Ridyard, Jamie Ellis; Chris Hill, Robbie Hunter-Paul, David Mills, Stuart Littler, Tommy Goulden, James Taylor. Subs: Andy Thornley, Steve Nash, John Duffy, Tyrone McCarthy.
