Shaw targets a gloss finish

FOUR successive wins doesn't mean it's job done for Leigh Centurions in their Northern Rail Cup qualifying group.

While they've built up a healthy lead at the top of the table the Centurions are determined to press on and finish the qualifiers as top of the bunch.

"There'll be no slacking off from us," says team boss Darren Shaw. "We've set our sights high and want six wins from six games come the end of the qualifiers."

The Centurions trek up to Barrow this weekend before wrapping up their group fixtures with a home clash against Blackpool on March 16.

"The final two games are just as important as the first two," says Shaw.

"I felt against Widnes last weekend that we're starting to build up a bit of momentum now. That was our best display of the season and we've got to match or better those standards in the weeks ahead.

"Our improvement was there for all to see on Sunday. We're going to have to improve on that again this weekend, I feel, because Barrow on their own patch won't be a pushover."

Barrow gave Leigh a tough time in an earlier group game at Hilton Park and before last night's (Wednesday) re-arranged game at Widnes, were second in the table.

One thing in Leigh's favour is by the time they arrive at Craven Park, Barrow will be preparing for their third game in eight days.

But Leigh have a few problems of their own with prop Andy Hobson the major casualty from the Widnes victory.

Hobson was having his best game in Leigh colours when he suffered a slight dislocation of the elbow.

"We'll be sending Andy off for x-rays and scans this week but it looks like he's popped' the joint. I'd say he's almost certain to miss the Barrow game," admitted Shaw.

That could mean Chris Hill starting in the front row alongside Mike Morrison although other options for Shaw include John Cookson and John Hill.

Leigh are also hoping that hooker Dave McConnell will come into contention. He damaged an ankle at Blackpool and wasn't considered for the Widnes game.
