Centurions cruise through with Lions mauling

Leigh Centurions 66 Featherstone Lions 0

LEIGH Centurions cruised into the fourth round of the Carnegie Challenge Cup with a 13-try mauling of amateurs Featherstone Lions.

With a half-time lead of 46-0, the Centurions were well on course to beat their previous club record win of 92-0, but a drop in standards after half time restricted them to just four more tries.

Team boss Darren Shaw was unhappy with Leigh's second half performance saying: "We went away from all the things that had worked for us in the first half. Our completion rate really dropped off and we turned possession over far too easily.

"Having said that I was delighted with the professional way we went about things in the first half when we were near perfect."

The Lions, a National League Three side, were hopelessly outclassed in the first 40 minutes as Leigh rattled the scoreboard along at better than a point a minute.

They were 12-0 up with less than five minutes on the clock as Lee Doran and John Hill collected tries both goaled by Ian Watson.

Shaw chose to experiment with his formation and brought in youngster Martin Keaveny into the pivotal stand-off role.

Keaveny didn't let his boss down as he scored two tries and provided the scoring pass for two more.

Shaw also opted to switch regular hooker Aaron Smith to loose forward and he too came up with the goods with two tries in a man-of-the-match performance.

With centres Toa Kohe-Love and Nathan McAvoy causing considerable damage on the flanks, Leigh scored nine first half tries in all.

Kohe-Love's second try of the game early in the second half took Leigh beyond the half century of points. But Leigh only managed another three touchdowns before the final hooter.
