This squad's got quality - Kelly

NEIL Kelly saw enough evidence in Leigh's disappointing defeat at Whitehaven on Monday to know he's inherited a quality team.

But Kelly is shrewd enough to know that Leigh are nowhere near playing to their full potential and much of his early work with the squad will be aimed at putting the little things right.

"When you look at the squad it's clear that there's quality all over the park," he said this week.

"But the one thing that is glaringly obviously is that the team's overall discipline is not good and they don't respect possession enough.

"Those two elements cost them the game at Whitehaven, I've absolutely no doubt about that.

"When things started to go against them in the second half all the things they'd been doing right in the first half went out of the window.

"All the players are at fault on that score and those two areas will be addressed this week as a matter of urgency."

Kelly officially took charge of the team on Tuesday morning and led his first training session that evening.

"It's been a good time for me to come in with us not having a game this weekend. Those extra days without having to prepare for a match will be invaluable," he added.

"I want to talk to the players individually and get to know them and what makes them tick. All that will be done before we play Featherstone on May 18.

"The league table doesn't lie and for this squad only to have won two games out of the first six isn't acceptable.

"I want to put some structures in place that will see us win some games and move up that table."

Leigh's reserve grade take on Widnes at Hilton Park tonight (Thursday), kick off 7.30pm. Admission is £3 and £1.
