Sporting champions celebrated at ceremony

LEIGH is home to sporting champions again.

The town was well represented among the winners of the ninth annual Borough Sports Awards, staged at Wigan’s JJB Stadium on Friday.

Tyldesley Swimming and Water Polo Club won the Club of the Year prize, while Atherton Cricket Club’s John Charlson collected the Unsung Hero honour.

Laura Riches, of Leigh Harriers Athletics Club, was runner up to Wigan Harriers’ Jenny Meadows in the Sports Achiever reckoning.

Leigh Rugby Union Club were runners up in the club category, with Astley and Tyldesley Cycle Speedway Club also a finalist.

Westleigh Cricket Club’s Arnold Woodcock was runner up in the Unsung Hero section, with Leigh and District Angling Association’s Kenneth Buxton a finalist.

Tyldesley Thunder Netball Team were finalists in the Team of the Year category, while Leigh Genesis Junior Football Club’s Steve Hilton was a finalist in the Coach of the Year award.
