Tyldesley 37 Kirkby Lonsdale 11

TYLDESLEY and Kirkby Lonsdale met in the sixth round of the EDF Senior Vase at St Georges Park in a game that pitched two of the top teams in the North Lancashire and Cumbria division against each other.

It was the visitors who were the most alert during the first few minutes and two mistakes from Tyldesley handed Kirkby the perfect start.

A great chip from the Kirkby fly half was misjudged by the defence and the loose ball was fly-hacked forward by Kirkby centre Dave Barton before he picked up and crashed over.

Five minutes later, it was Kirkby who also contributed to their own downfall when a disrupted scrum caused Kirkby to rush a pass and the loose ball was picked up by the impressive Dickinson.

He passed to the equally impressive John Fisher who shipped the ball to Nick Reddrop and he raced in at the corner.

Tyldesley struck again on 15 minutes when Mark Dickinson put a great pass to Gary Corbett who danced his way past three defenders to score, Dickinson converting.

It got even better for the home team when another good platform was set by the forwards two minutes later and John Fisher passed to supporting full back Grobler who ran in a try on the right hand side.

The remainder of the first period was played in the Tyldesley half and Kirkby scrum half James Hadwin converted penalties in the 20th and 29th minutes to put the visitors within striking distance.

But a moment of respite on 35 minutes resulted in probably Tyldesley’s best try of the season.

An up-and-under from fly half Ashley Worsfold was taken by Mark Dickinson and the ball was shipped back to Worsfold via Fisher. Although there seemed to be little on, he fired an exquisite 25 metre pass to Corbett who once again stepped through three covering defenders to score.

Dickinson kicked a penalty and then, from an attacking five-metre scrum, Mynhardt picked up at number 8 and brushed away defenders to score.

The game needed closing out once and Fisher provided the perfect finale as he took a pass from Worsfold and stepped the Kirkby defence expertly to crash over on the left wing.

Tyldesley entertain Oldham at St Georges Park on Saturday, kick off 2.15pm.
