THE recently-formed Astley VIP Amateur Boxing Club enjoyed immediate success at a show in Yorkshire just weeks after being affiliated to the Amateur Boxing Association (ABA).
Senior welterweight David Morris took part in the club's first official contest, coming away with an excellent points victory over national quarter finalist Jack Wiley (Redcar ABC).
“Victory was the perfect reward for David’s efforts,” said head coach Damian Jones.
“He has been working hard in the gym over the past few weeks despite having to combine training with revision for his exams.”
Wiley had reached the last eight of both the CYP Championships and the Junior ABA Championships this season, but Morris was a comfortable winner thanks to a fast start that saw him win the first two rounds of the contest with an aggressive display of counter punching.
His opponent showed his experience by finishing strongly, probably edging the third and final round but by then it was too late to change the judges’ decision.
