Leigh Miners Rgrs 20 West Hull 12 A TRY on his comeback for Leon Brennan helped Miners to a hard-fought National Conference win over West Hull.
For three-quarters of the match it appeared set to be a comfortable victory and a hard-earned clean sheet as Miners led 20-0 but two West tries in the final 15 minutes made it a slightly nervier finish.
Besides welcoming international tourist Brennan back from injury, Miners also had Mark Jones available following work commitments although Dave Patterson and Tom Eckersley both missed out with injuries.
Miners opened in commanding fashion and took the lead on eight minutes, the outstanding Liam Coleman throwing out a long pass to the left for Adam Thomason to send Jones in at the corner, with Tom Bradbury converting.
Coleman and Jon Youds linked up from a scrum to send Brennan striding in for the next try to double the lead.
The lead was further increased when some good pressure saw Youds send Lee Gittens in for a try.
Miners scored their final try five minutes into the second half, gaining field position from a penalty and Coleman sending Bradley over.
Miners’ second team had a 36-0 win at West Bank Swans in the North West Counties League with Kev Howells grabbing two tries.
Tomorrow, Friday, the first team host Ince Rose Bridge at Twist Lane, kick off 7.30pm.
