Great Scott riding high on motocross

TEENAGER Scott Stephens is riding high after a clean sweep in both the North West Motocross Championships and League.

The 14-year-old, who races for Leigh Motocross club, won more than 10 races and amassed a collection of 25 trophies at the Inter-juniors level in only his third season of racing.

Inspired by watching his uncle, Scott got his first bike at five-years-old and has been riding ever since.

It has been a quick trip to the top for Scott, who hopes to emulate his recent success in the under 18s championship next year.

This is a difficult step-up for the young racer, moving up to a 250cc bike, more than twice as powerful as the 85cc he currently rides.

Scott said: “I’ve never ridden a 250cc bike before. I have tried a couple of races at the under 18s level and they are a lot faster, with better tracks.”

He intends to take the challenge in his stride and nurtures ambitions of performing at the sport’s top level, the British Masters, in a few years’ time.

Scott takes his sport seriously, training three times a week and practicing on the track at every opportunity.

His parents are delighted with his success and have played a large part in supporting his fledgling racing career, particularly financially.

Motocross bikes are not cheap, costing thousands of pounds, and there is plenty of other equipment that is essential for a racer’s safety and development.

Scott’s mum and dad have been happy to help their son reach his goals but he is keen to obtain some sponsorship and take his racing to the next level.

He said: “Sponsorship will help a lot, it is the next step for me if I want to continue in the sport. I want to get better, move up and progress.”

Scott fits his racing around his schoolwork, attending Sutton High Sports College, where he has just started his GCSEs.

He will begin his campaign in the under 18s championship next March.
