York Acorn 14 Leigh East 26

CHAMPIONS Leigh East got the new National Conference League season off to a winning start with a few new faces in the team.

Among them were former Saints and Widnes prop Owain Brown, who was making the hard yards and defending well until he suffered a broken leg just after the interval.

BARLA International centre Steve Fisher and former Workington and Whitehaven centre or second row Steve Ormanshaw had great games in the centres, running good lines and tackling well.

Under 21s international half back/hooker Mark Cahill made his second appearance off the bench and had an immediate impact, marshalling the team around the field, making probing runs and scoring a try to stake his claim for a regular spot in the squad.

Acorn took an 8-0 lead but East pulled back to within two points on the stroke of half time, Mark Ballard going over from acting half. Peters added the extras.

Following a 10-minute stoppage while Brown was treated for his injury, Acorn took advantage of a bit of disorganisation in the East line with Jon Waldron scoring in the corner to restore the eight-point advantage.

Any ideas the home team had of pulling off a shock win were destroyed in a seven minute spell which saw stand off Gary Middlehurst tearing the home defence apart and some classic backing up by all his team mates leading to tries by Andrew Groves, Cahill and Fisher.

Peters added three conversions and a penalty goal to give East a winning 12-point advantage.

East can now look forward to a home derby with Miners on Wednesday.
