EVO-STIK Division One North side Prescot Cables were the visitors to Alder House for a cracking FA Cup tie.
A 1-0 defeat at AFC Blackpool in midweek may have left some wondering whether Colls could stand a chance in this game.
Having also lost in midweek, Cables were looking to silence their own critics.
Colls started a little too positively and were left wide open at the back for Aaron Rey to get the visitors off to the best possible start.
The home side looked a little shaken by the goal but almost replied two minutes later.
Kevin Kynaston scuffed his shot in the six-yard box with a gaping goalmouth to aim for.
With 12 minutes gone, Farah Jackson came rushing out of his goal and felled his own centre half, thus allowing Paul Hynes to score in an empty net from 18 yards.
Colls were in the ascendancy and with 20 minutes gone Jonathan Bridge had a free header igo wide from 12 yards out.
Following that miss, the wind picked up and the game descended into a scrappy affair with neither side making any clear-cut chances.
Two minutes into first-half stoppage time, Colls were awarded a free kick close to the halfway line.
Andy Walker launched the ball into the penalty area where it was flicked on before it came to Hynes at an awkward height.
He did well, though, and finished superbly to ensure that the home side went in ahead at the break.
Colls will feel that the tie should have been safe with 52 minutes played, when Kevin Kynaston was unfortunate to have a goal disallowed for offside.
At the other end, Prescot had a succession of corners, culminating in Aaron Rey bagging his brace to equalise for the visitors.
Two minutes later, Josh Harris was forced into making an excellent save to maintain parity.
The visitors continued to provide further heart-in-mouth moments for Colls with a number of wides as time ran out.
Phil Williams missed a late chance from two yards to settle it.
