Tyldesley 32 Widnes 12
TYLDESLEY Rugby Union Club’s first XV returned to winning ways with a victory over third-placed Widnes.
The visitors had been unbeaten in six matches and had scored 235 points in their last five games but they came unstuck at St George’s Park in a game that showed why both teams are in the upper reaches of the division.
Tyldesley disrupted a Widnes scrum on the visitors’ 10-metre line but when the ball shot out Widnes reacted quickly and counter attacked with pace to cross wide out.
Tyldesley went in front five minutes later. They were awarded a penalty in front of the posts but captain Dickinson elected for a scrum and when it was won fly half Worsfold ducked a couple of tackles to touch down a converted try.
The lead changed hands again on 15 minutes when a long Tyldesley kick went dead. From the ‘scrum back’ Widnes used their pacy backs to good effect, crossing for a converted score.
Tyldesley drew level 15 minutes before the break when Craig Pulman crashed over by the left corner flag.
Bongs scored with the last play of the half when scrum half Cunliffe spotted a blind-side gap on the halfway line. He shot through the hole and fed the supporting Travis Twizell who got to within 10 metres of the line before he found Gaz Corbett for what is becoming a customary Saturday afternoon try.
The second period was nip and tuck for the first 10 minutes but when Dickinson took Tyldesley to within five metres of the Widnes try line from a penalty, the forwards took over to convert a catch-and-drive to perfection. Dickinson converted and then all but put the game out of Widnes’ reach when he slotted a 60th minute penalty.
Craig Pulman scored his second try on the final whistle. Adam Fetherston secured the man-of-the-match award but Jack Williams ran him close with another outstanding display.
Bongs travel to Winnington Park on Saturday and expect another tough encounter against a team who are fourth in the table.
l Tyldesley Rugby Union Club’s junior colts team stayed in touch with the top four thanks to a disciplined performance in a 27-14 win against a good Preston side.
Drawing 7-7 at half time, Tyldesley took control with tries from Luke Bowes and Billy Fisher.
Preston closed the gap to five points with a converted try but a Paul Gillbanks penalty four minutes later and a try by Zak Brindle three minutes from time secured a well deserved win.
Top tacklers Fisher and James March were joint winners of the man-of-the-match honour.
